Election Wrap - 26 September

Coasters:

PM sent in the following suggestion for the Labor DVDs being posted out to electors:

“As a way of recycling the unsolicited mail that is “Stanhope: The Movie” (coming to a letterbox near you), The Pot Belly is gladly accepting the DVDs and will use them as coasters.

It’s either that, or some very creative community-based public artwork.

So, come on down, enjoy a beer and make a difference to the environment this election. Ask for Joan or Matt.

Pangallo’s Queanbeyan mess

NarraGreenie has been in touch with proceedings out of Queanbeyan Council suggesting that Frank Pangallo’s renovations of a house in Gilmore Place, Queanbeyan, might have left behind an asbestos mess.

Costings:

The Canberra Times is giving Labor a booting over costing claims and counter claims.

Cycling

The CT has a bit on a bunch of the parties and their thoughts on cycle paths.

Mulcahy Canberra Party:

Richard Mulcahy’s mob have put a slew of their ads up on YouTube. Of particular interest though is the “Star Wars” ad.

We really, really, want to know if Richard is with the rebels or the empire. Your thoughts?

Liberals:

Zed and Steve are talking about “new opportunities for Multiculturalism in the ACT”. They’re going to cost an extra $328,000.

Zed is mocking the Chief Minister for claiming that housing affordability is making the ACT Government a “victim” of their own success.

The Liberals seem to make more TV ads than they do media releases or policy documents. They’ve now unleashed an attack on Jon Stanhope’s credibility.

Labor:

It’s a Green day in the Labor camp with a slew of announcements:
More Help for Canberrans to Reduce Waste
More Help for Canberrans to Save Water
More Practical Solutions to Climate Change
ACT Labor’s Commitment to a Greener Canberra
$1M Pledge for Greening Australia’s Cotter Project

Mr Stanhope is also promising not to campaign or advertise through the football grand finals. One wonders if this has more to do with lack of funds and volunteer enthusiasm than any care for a weary public.

Mick Gentleman is speculating that a Liberal Government would flog off ACTION.

But the real cost is always in paying for the airtime.

This would be why I’ve only seen it once on the ABC’s Election timeslot, and then only on Youtube?

Ad production can be done relatively cheaply.

If you’re capable of writing your own scripts and providing decent photography you can get an ad done for as little as $500.

But the real cost is always in paying for the airtime.

And once you’ve shelled out $50k to show it to people scrimping on the ad you’re showing starts looking a lot like a false economy.

Having noticed a few features of Mulcahy’s ad campaign, he seems to use J. Burnley as his voiceover talent (or an R Burnley in two of them, but R has the same voice as J, apparently).
According to the Allan Miller Media’s sales page, John Burnley is only worth $30 per 30 second block of reading.
The time Burnley spends talking across the four videos adds up to less than 30 seconds.

So with one trip to the edge of Lake Burley Griffin and Curtin shops for the ‘looking important around town’ scenes, $30 plus editing time gets you a Youtube election campaign.
But John Burnley was once the voice of Casino Canberra’s radio advertising campaign, so its possible Mulcahy knew him through the Hotels Association, and landed the use of Burnley as a freebie.

They would usually get address info from the electoral roll. If my memory serves me, the enrolment form asks for an email address, so if you entered it there that may be the source of your inbox spam.

Maybe that’s it, not sure. Trap for young players either way.

amusing thing is that I haven’t received anything, but I have a very good filter.

“Mulcahy’s croaky voice, the sideways glance, can there be any doubt?!”

What IS it with the talking out of the side of the face thing??? Not a good look on the news and worse on his TV ads.

However I heard his spiel on ABC 666 the other day and he had his points nailed very well.

Meredith Hunter’s pitch b/o the Greens the next day was also right on the money.

Mulcahy’s croaky voice, the sideways glance, can there be any doubt?!

Anyone else see Norvan set up his pitch on Northbourne Ave this morning? It was all a bit sad and forlorn I thought.

Anyone else get some Canberra Liberals guff via email? Given I have never voted Liberal in my life I’m quite interested as how they managed to source my email address???

Do you belong to any community/business organisations?

best quote = pool room!

look sir!

candidates!

These aren’t the candidates we’re looking for.

“Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.”

“The ACT Legislative Assembly: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious”

He was so hot once, too!

; )

You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing…”

“You may dispense with the pleasantries, Commander. I’m here to put you back on schedule.”

Mulcahy is definitely on the side of the empire – indeed, with the correct clothing and change of hairstyle he would be a dead ringer for Darth Sidious

Mulcahy is definitely an Empire man.

The more he tightens his grip, the more votes slip through his fingers.
