Election Wrap - 7 October

Polling:

A reader’s been in touch with a story about the Patterson pollsters asking to speak to the youngest voter in the house. Make of that what you will.

The CT reports that according to that polling Jon Stanhope is the preferred CM of green voters.

Deputy Debate:

The CT wants us to know that their deputy’s debate is on at 12.30 today at the Legislative Assembly.

CAP:

Val Jeffery’s been having a rant to the Canberra Times. He’s discovered that unattended roadside signage suffers from attrition and is outraged that such “scumbags” would attack the fundamentals of democracy as represented by his signage. He’s also frightened of Greens.

Dr. Alvin Hopper has some suggestions for making appointments to the judiciary more transparents and giving the courts more discretion in the spending of their funding. He’s also proposing a volunteer community body to make helpful suggestions about law reform.

James Sizer is demanding an end to taxpayer funded cars and petrol for our elected leaders.

Roger Nicoll is accusing the Greens of pinching his planning policy.

Labor:

How dare you idiots think me arrogant? The Canberra Times has Jon Stanhope’s reaction to poll numbers labelling him arrogant. It’s down to our pygmy intellects failing to appreciate his greatness really.

Simon Corbell is promising to establish Suburban Policing Consultative Committees to give residents a “direct say” in their policing. Hilarity to ensue…

Andrew Barr is upping his bid for Gungahlin votes with the promise of a new enclosed oval to go with the swimming pool.

John Hargreaves was too busy at a multiculti function to grace the pedal power forum, but he wants you to know he loves cyclists. Really.

Greens:

Shane Rattenbury is promising to re-establish a “neighbourhood planning process” as part of the Greens policy on urban planning.

Mulcahy Canberra Party:

Richard has announced a health policy. More nurse practitioners and a desire to lose the tag as the most expensive place in Australia to treat patients.

Liberals:

Vicki Dunne is having a go over allegations of toxic waste being dumped in Canberra landfills.

The much discussed Liberal Indigenous policy is now public.

Zed and Steve’s plan for a more cycle friendly Canberra has made it online in time for tonight’s Pedal Power forum.

The Liberals might not be arsed to answer your questions in the candidate questionaire. But they have told the ABC that they’re not going to keep blowing 1% of the capital works budget on public art. And they’ll consult on any public art.

Small print runs do have much higher unit costs.

Plus Jim Murphy’s printer mate might be kicking a bit back to him?

Mate not that large and I see printing quotes every working day.

I’ve little doubt there are those that when presented with a ballot paper think “I saw that guy on a roadsign.” *writes number 1 in the box* – but surely the majority of people are basing their decision on something more worthwhile than signs?

Recent events in Palerang – specifically the election of one Mister Graham to council after an expensive and very high profile campaign – would be further evidence of the fact that people simply wander into polling booths with no clue, think “oh yeah, I’ve seen his ugly mug on posters all over the place” and subsequently put a big fat number one in the box. They then go home, satisfied at having fulfilled their civic duty. Never before this election had I realised why voluntary voting can be a good thing.

There was a topic?

Perhaps corflute is actually the larval stage of the lifeform that metamorphoses into urban art? Or speed cameras?

Back on topic people

Where? Your own imagination?

Next time tell them you don’t want them engraved ….

$17 per corflute?

GODDAMN!

$17!!

*thud*

if val jeffrey wants to keep his signs, perhaps placing them all together is the wrong way to do it…

…I think Val got 300 odd done.

Yes it was cold this morning – The Laptop is to get the media releases done 🙂 My corflutes cost me $17 each I got 50 of them done. I think Val go 300 odd done.

Maybe Val did pay $3000 for 100 corflutes, revealing that he is an idiot, and not suitable to be an MLA, just like Stanhope.

Hmm, good point.

HA, thanks granny.

HAHA, it was more me poking fun at the ACT YL’s (I am a member) in a manner that only I would understand.

That’s a photo of the flying squad for the federal election. This election I’m not sure if there actually is an ‘official’ flying squad as it tends to be a bit awkward (what with Liberal candidates competing not just for resources but for votes).

I’m actually in that photo on the far left. Not one of my best photos (long hair and a cap is not a good combination). I call that the ‘why do I waste my weekends?/ just throw on whatever clothes are closest’ look.

Those interested should note that next to me is Ben O’Neil, a Canberra Party candidate in Molonglo (and Mulcahy staffer), and on the far right is Liberal candidate Matt Watts.

Our mums think we are cool.

I wonder if the Young Liberals flying squad have anything to do with these incidents… suspicious that no Liberal corflutes are going missing or being damaged.

Wait wait wait, there’s actually a Young Liberals flying squad? I thought that was just a myth.

No, not a myth unfortunately. Look, if you dare, at the picture of them in the Young Lib journal…

http://www.actyoungliberals.org.au/journal_files/VoltairiumIss7Aut2008.pdf

If they need someone to star in a sequel to 40 year Old Virgin in about 23 years time, look no further…. *imagining the YL flying squad marching around their loungerooms on a Sat night playing the euphonium*

I hope no ones thinks to set FIRE to Val’s signs!
That would drive him completely nuts and give him the chance to talk about his favourite things!

this is bugging me so i did some costings of my own;

1 corflute at 3.50 (the full colour lib ones cost 2.80, i’m allowing around 20% extra for their being smaller numbers in a CAP order)
1/10 of a tube of liquid nails 27 cents (2.71 for orders over 20 at hardwaredotnetdotau)
4 staples 5c
1 1.5m stake $1.50 (can be done a lot cheaper than this if the candidate knows what they are doing, as can glue, i’ll assume as a first time candidate val doesn’t know how)
I’m not going to put a value on the labour used to build and stick up the signs because as they went up durning the day (on a week day too) that suggests to me that whoever was sticking them up was taking time off work so their oppurtunity cost is very low.

these costings giva a figue of $5.32 per corflute; now i’ll give some leeway to val, say 20% again just in case my figures aren’t generous enough, this gives a figure of $6.38, now 100 times $6.38 is an awful lot less than 3000 bucks……

anyone like to offer an alternate costing?

Carry on, Norvan!

; )

I wish I’d seen that! I might have helped him wave a sign around for a while. What is the laptop for?

So he can read your comments here as far as I can tell.

I wish I’d seen that! I might have helped him wave a sign around for a while. What is the laptop for?

I was driving to work this morning at 6:30am along Monaro Highway from Tuggeranong and I saw Norvan (the CAP guy) on the side of the road with his signs and laptop. Unlike the other guys he doesn’t sit in is car with the heater on and the radio going. It must have been -1’C and the twit was out with his bloody “not happy jon” signs. I’ve also seen him a few times on the way home like last Thursday it must have been 8pm or something.

They’ve all been impounded already!

*heh heh heh*

Corflutes if purchased in bulk (100+) should not cost more than $10-$12/each (they can be purchased for less on a large print run)… remember it always makes a good media coverage to have a good whinge that someone is doing something nasty to you when you are campaigning.

At the Woden Valley Community Council candidate meeting last week and David Matthews had mentioned that a large number of his coreflutes had been physically slashed in half. Haven’t seen that hit the media yet… sounds far more sinister.

I wonder if the Young Liberals flying squad have anything to do with these incidents… suspicious that no Liberal corflutes are going missing or being damaged.

MrMagoo: I am in no way surprised at the general apathy for the whole process.

There’s little to differentiate the parties in any meaningful way, constant sniping by single issue groups (be it school closures, dragway, power plant) and years of lacklustre government that only looks good in comparison to the opposition.

It’s a bit like the tagline from AvP: Whoever wins, we lose.

Also, on a side observation, I do think that a lot of people in this town voted for Chairman Kevin, hoping for a big change from the previous federal government. So far I’m disappointed and perhaps a few others are too. That disappointment can easily become apathy towards the political process.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you are a funny guy Cameron.

…that was a joke right?

Oh, and the ‘scumbags’ missed some. I still see his “weather-beaten face” on my way home. And I’m not sure where his 100 were placed. I’ve only ever seen maybe 10 of them.

I agree tom-tom, $3000 does seem a bit excessive. And they weren’t even that nice.

Jonathon Reynolds1:01 pm 07 Oct 08

Andrew Barr is upping his bid for Gungahlin votes with the promise of a new enclosed oval to go with the swimming pool.

Sorry Andrew, hollow promises without a dollar figure (even indicative) and dates for completion of the facility just don’t cut it with the Gungahlin community any more.

Next time get Mr. Kindermann to write a beter media release for you with some actual detail instead of “fluff” announcements.

Maybe Rioters are a different breed, but did anyone else see the piece on the Election in the CT on Sunday and some vox pops with people about the forthcoming poll. I was amazed at the apparent lack of 1. understanding that there was an election coming up (one woman who seemed oblivious) 2. lack of the electorates grasp of the current issues, 3. general apathy for the whole process.

Mind you they will be the same people to line first and complain about a new government not giving them what they want.

$3000 for 100 signs! who does Mr jeffery’s think he’s kidding? unless his signs had gold plating 100 signs and stakes would be worth 400-500 tops…. I’m pretty doubtful that he lost a hundred of them aswell, thats an awful lot to disappear with out someone being caught pinching them. Perhaps Val just wanted to get in the paper?

I question the value of the signs anyway. Most of the time it’s difficult to determine who it is on the sign until you’ve driven past it a few times (this assumes you’re concentrating on, you know, the road). Once you do know who it is, does seeing their sign on the side of the road really sway your vote?

I’ve little doubt there are those that when presented with a ballot paper think “I saw that guy on a roadsign.” *writes number 1 in the box* – but surely the majority of people are basing their decision on something more worthwhile than signs?

Perhaps if he’d spent the $3000 on something more effective – even a quick ad buy – he wouldn’t have run the risk of having it stolen.

I very much doubt that it’s other candidates or anyone affiliated with them swiping Val’s signs. It’ll just be kids doing it for a laugh. It’s just the risk you take when you put something in a public place and don’t bolt it down. Bad luck, Val.

there’s one guy in my english class who’s 18th birthday is ON the same day as the election..guess that’d make him the youngest?

happy birthday… now you can vote.

Perhaps there were some Greens who wouldn’t get off Val’s lawn once.

there’s one guy in my english class who’s 18th birthday is ON the same day as the election..guess that’d make him the youngest?

funny thing, as my car has vic plates, the people on the side of the road don’t wave at me – maybe they think I won’t be voting…..

I was polled about a year ago as the ‘youngest voter in the house’. I figure it’s either a demographic specific study, or a tool to get the demographic sample of a poll in line with the population.
