With thanks to the ABC for the heads up I can inform you that the ACT electoral commission has now finalised the list of parties running in the 2008 election.

And they are:

  • Australian Labor Party (ACT Branch)
  • Australian Motorist Party
  • Free Range Canberra
  • Liberal Democratic Party
  • Liberal Party of Australia (A.C.T. Division)
  • Pangallo Independents Party
  • Richard Mulcahy Canberra Party
  • The ACT Greens
  • The Community Alliance Party (ACT)

Richard Mulcahy squeaked in with his registration coming though today. Apparently the Christian Democrats have ceased to exist.

The local government rules are different in every state.

Local Government has four year terms? Wow, for some reason I thought it was a lot less (like one or two).

Is four years standard?

Antony Green3:58 pm 21 Jul 08

Nothing to stop him being Mayor of Queanbeyan while living in Canberra. He’d have had to be on the roll for the Council to have been elected four years ago, but there is nothing that says you have to stay on the roll. Anyway, if he owns property in Queanbeyan, he’d be a rate payer and entitled to be on the non-residents roll.

With four year terms in local government, there would be many a Councillor who by the end of four years might have moved residence outside of a council area. Most councils are usually happy to leave the Councillor in place because it avoids the cost of a by-election. Anyway, in Pangallo’s case, he will no longer be on Council by the time the formal election is called. As yet he isn’t a candidate as no writ has been issued. Legally nobody is a candidate until nominations are called for, and the legal definition is the only one to go on.

Sweet would be the irony of seeing Pangallo elected, then having to support Molonglo residents down the southern end of the electorate to *oppose* Queanbeyan Council approving more stupid residential development under the airport flight path that could lead to noise sharing over the southern Canberra suburbs.

What goes around (or over in this case) comes around…

TroyWilliams11:52 am 21 Jul 08

Pangallo announced he has moved to a property he owns in Canberra which means he will have his enrolment sorted out.

… and he’s still the Mayor of Queanbeyan?

If it was in the same jurisdiction, go for it – in the past there have been a lot of sitting Mayors who have run at a state or national level. To be Mayor in one state and running for the state legislature in another just seems odd.

Anthony, is there a precedent for this elsewhere?

I prefer to think I’ve freed them of fear

For a minute I thought i was on the wrong site .. there seems to be intellectual, informative and educated discussion going on about politics.(?)

Johnboy, you scared the s*** out of them?

I think Pangallo might do rather well. He knows the job. As for differences between Qbn and Canberra, there aren’t that many. Pangallo has presided over a somewhat artification of Qbn (the Rusty building and teh Q, not ot mention outdoor dining in the main street), suggesting he’ll slide right in to the city pretensions of Canberra.

Pangallo announced he has moved to a property he owns in Canberra which means he will have his enrolment sorted out. He has also announced he is not contesting the NSW local government elections on 13 September so will no onger be on Council. So he will have everything in order to contest the ACT election.

Gungahlin Al7:26 pm 20 Jul 08

He can’t be in both places at once. If he’s moved then surely he can’t be a Councillor any more?

PS: what Jakez said.

Apparently he’s just finished moving in toa house in the ACT but still has his Mayor’s chains.

Quite what broad based community support he thinks he has is beyond me.

Too many people at dinner parties telling him he’s great I reckon.

TroyWilliams4:44 pm 20 Jul 08

I agree with Thumper about Pangallo.

Without debating whatever it is he stands for, I wonder how the good people of Queanbeyan feel about their mayor jumping ship to stand across the border? I’m assuming he’s still out representing NSW residents while out asking ACT residents for their vote.

Does he think that we are silly enough (pls don’t debate that point) to elect somebody who doesn’t even live in the Territory? Or has he moved here, or planning to move here and if so, during his time as mayor?

Just seems odd to me, then again most aspects of ACT politics do.

My fearless prediction – Mulcahy, Barr and Burke to lose their seats (Barr and Burke weren’t elected anyway, they replaced retiring members). Pangallo to be elected plus one Green. Stanhope to be returned as CM but losing majority government.

Incorrect actually. In the last election Burke was elected on the day. It was the previous two terms that she got in on a count back.

I’d be disappointed if Barr lost, I think he is one of the ALP’s best. Poor bastard got lumped with the poison chalice of education just as they started closing schools.

I can’t see Mulcahy winning. It’s just like Helen Cross at the previous election. She put obscene amounts of money into her campaign (I believe she was bankrolled by the Greek community), tote bags for every household et al. She got smashed. Mulcahy will get smashed as well.

Didn’t they change their name to ‘Canberra Liberals’?

As if calling themselves Canberra Liberals and copying Labor’s campaign style will help them! I don’t see much hope for them (either locally or federally) until they stop acting like traitors, rally confidently behind their leader (and stop engaging in infantile infighting), and put forward some policies that actually differentiate them from everyone else. Pigs might fly….

Actually they engaged a marketing company, shortly after the Federal Election, to offer suggestions as to how to dissociate themselves from the Federal Liberal Party… and in particular Brendon Nelson.

The company came up with ” LIBERALZ “

Apparantly the spelling was meant to make them seem fresh and new…and giving the name an immediate association with Zed Seselja.

For some reason they decided not to go with it!!!

But they’re just not the same, Jake, you don’t feel you’ve voted for the Monster Raving Loony Party until it’s too late.

they call themselves the CAP these days

And yet again there is no Monster Raving Loony Party. Such a shame 🙁

They may not go by that name butI’d suggest quite a number above are monster raving loony party’s.

I wonder how many independents will actually run since (it appears) there is almost no chance they’ll get in. Pangallo and Mulcahy are fortunate to have the resources to manufacture a party in a short period of time.

Also, weren’t the Canberra Business Forum (I don’t think that’s the correct name but is some split Liberals group involving Jim Murphy?) thinking of starting a party?

Applications and Registrations are two different things (One starts, and one ends the process).
Many government authorities do that, but for most places the process is a lot faster.

Is Mulcahy a valid party? According to the ACT Electoral Commission site “An application for party registration, or any application to change the name or abbreviation of an already registered party, may be made at any time. However, to take effect at an election, an application must be made before 1 July in an election year.”

They do go on to say “This allows time for the necessary steps to be completed before the close of the register 36 days before polling day. No action can be taken on any application or appeal against a decision on an application during the pre-election
period.”

Jazz,

I have a reasonably complete list of all the candidates and their contact details in a spreadsheet
Contact me via CanberraVotes site with your direct contact details and I’ll forward it through

Where are the “Residents Rally” and “No Self-Govt” parties?

maybe that will be their election promise…

I wish some of these parties would join the rest of us in the 21st century and have an email address.

Apparently the Christian Democrats have ceased to exist.

Yay!

maybe the christian democrats was an oxymoron?
