The Canberra Times brings word of a push by the Electric Boat Association to get recharging facilities installed at the Kingston Foreshore boat harbour development.

The boat association’s secretary Steven Mullie said Lake Burley Griffin was an ideal location for an electric boating community because of its speed limits and restrictions on petrol-powered craft.

”The Government is looking for ways to open up the lake and this is one of the ways they could do it. They are zero-emission craft, they are ideal for closed waterways like Lake Burley Griffin, where there is not a lot of influx of fresh water. They are not fast moving craft and travel under 10km an hour.”

Mr Mullie said Canberrans were currently able to apply for electric boat permits but a lack of infrastructure made it difficult for people to launch and recharge the battery-powered vessels. He said the installation of electricity power points at the boat harbour would make Lake Burley Griffin a more attractive waterway for electric boat users.

It would answer the question of just what the harbour on a land locked lake is for.

OK, I’ll bite – who does he expect to pay for the power points, their maintenance, and the electricity? Not me, or other taxpayers, I hope.
