Elizabeth Symons to take a seat at ACAT

Simon Corbell has announced the appointment of a part-time Presidential Member of the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal:

“Elizabeth Symons is a respected member of the ACT legal fraternity, and will bring valuable experience and skills to the tribunal,” Mr Corbell said.

Ms Symons started her legal career in Queanbeyan as a family law solicitor and a litigation solicitor in 1975.

Since 1994 she has held a number of judicial and public appointments including:

— Special Magistrate, ACT Magistrates Court (1994-2004)
— Deputy Children’s Court Magistrate (1999-2000)
— Commissioner, ACT Legal Aid Commission (2004-5)
— Deputy Chair, ACT Sentence Administration Board (2005-7)
— Member, Social Security Appeals Tribunal (2008-2012)

“I am sure this appointment will be welcomed by the ACT legal profession, among whom Ms Symons enjoys a strong reputation,” Mr Corbell said.

The seven year appointment starts on 1 April 2012.
