Simon Corbell is blowing the trumpet for Emily Dyson who, at 11 years of age, saved her mother’s life by remembering to dial 000:

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, has praised a quick-thinking primary school girl after she found her mother having difficulty breathing and saved her life by calling for an ambulance.

“I commend the efforts of Emily Dyson, who at only 11 years of age, had the knowledge to call Emergency Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance after her mother experienced breathing difficulty,” Mr Corbell said.

“In an emergency every second is vital and the quick actions of Emily demonstrates the importantance to get help early on, as in this case it saved her mother who suffered a full cardiac arrest.”

Sorry to be one of those negative types but really is an 11 year old calling triple 0 really an act of bravery? I would hope my kids would well and truly be able to do that by then. Still that shouldn’t take away from the fact that her mother possibly owes her her life and well done and all that.

And in tonight’s news, a 12 year Canberra boy receives a commendation from ACT Waste Management for remembering to put the recycling bin out on the right day…..

Pretty sad when we have to get excited that an 11 year old knows how to dial 000 – but then looking at most other kids her age, they probably wouldn’t notice anything was wrong with Mum until they ran out of chips and coke, and had to drag themselves away from the PS3 to get themselves a snack.

But what if her mother turns out to be the next Hitler?

And here is douchebag of the year. Do they have a ceremony for that?

Yep – it’s straight after the one where you get your “Humourless Git Of The Year” award.

I think that publicising Emily’s actions may bring home to children what to do in these circumstances more than just being told by parents or teachers. She had to remember the right thing to do while her mother was having trouble breathing, which would be very stressful, so well done to her.

Yeah, my children talk about Emily occasionally, so this definitely raises awareness which could save somebody’s life.

Good on you Emily, well done.

‘And here is douchebag of the year. Do they have a ceremony for that?’

A douche is a device used to introduce a stream of water into the body for medical or hygienic reasons, or the stream of water itself. There are no known ceremonies involving this device.
