ACT Policing apprehended five drink-drivers following targeted Random Breath Testing in the Emu Bank area of Belconnen early this morning (Thursday July 4).
Between 1am and 4am, Belconnen patrol members conducted 50 traffic stops that resulted in five drink-driving offences.
These included a 33-year-old man who holds a probationary licence for previous drink-driving offences. He returned an Alcohol Content (AC) reading of 0.132. A 21-year-old Watson woman also returned an AC reading of 0.151, more than three times the legal limit.
Four drivers received Immediate Suspension Notices (ISN) and all five will be summonsed to face court at a later date.
Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Rod Anderson said this was an alarming result and it is clear that people still aren’t getting the message.
“Last month we removed 104 drink-drivers from Canberra roads as we focused our efforts on reducing the impacts of impaired driving,” Acting Superintendent Anderson said.
“Conditions are hazardous enough this winter without impaired drivers ignoring our messages, risking their lives and the lives of other people in our community by choosing to commit these offences”.
“Every police car is fitted with breath-testing equipment and these results show that if you chose to ignore the message to drink or drive, you could be caught anywhere, anytime.”
