The northern entrance to Cooleman Court Shopping Centre in Weston is set for a makeover, with the current concrete ramp entry to be replaced by an enclosed, weather-proofed travellator.

According to a development application lodged by owner Mirvac, the new, accessible entry way on Mahony Court will provide a more functional and attractive façade to the main pedestrian and car parking area of Cooleman Court.

The existing ramp and balustrade will be demolished and a travellator and lift installed.

The entry way will be enclosed, with glass windows and glazed automated doors installed to weather-proof it.

New signage has also been proposed for the northern façade, as well as new façade treatments and textures to improve presentation and visual interest.

A modernised entrance should also make life easier for customers battling with shopping trolleys and the elements on the sloped entrance, as well as people with disabilities.

Cooleman Court is part of the Weston Group Centre, which serves Weston Creek and the Molonglo Valley.

As someone who pushed shopping trolleys up that ramp for over a year in the 1990s I wonder how the trolleys will get back to Woolies (and Aldi) now. Also gone will be the strength contests to see how many trolleys the collectors could push up the ramp. I could only manage 16 or 17 but one of the kids could push 22 up. But I suppose that avenue of fitness and pleasure went a long time ago due to OH&S (and 457 visas).

As everyone else says, parking is an issue at this centre. My suspicions are that a lot of the parking in the time limited zones is de facto long stay parking meaning there is very little turnover. Personally, I will not park my pristine car in the car parks there because the last pristine car I parked there was dented pretty quickly. The disability parking appears to be abused by able bodied people with access to a pass, but my only evidence is the observation of people parking in the spots and then proceeding to the gym at a rapid clip. Yes, there is also those ramps with yellow paint at the roadway that make for an excellent stopping spot between delivery trucks – people needing mobility aids to get around can just wait! Then you have the utes and trailers parking on or across the footpaths. But there should be a special place reserved for the domains who think the motorcycle parking is really overflow parking.

What I have discovered is there is a sweet spot between 2pm when the old folk finally go home and 3pm when the crazed school mothers turn up in their SUVs, usually on two wheels. I find I can be in and out of there inside 30 minutes!
