Enforcing no parking zones

On Friday night I went to the National Museum’s excellent Silk Road Night Markets. This person has blocked about 30 cars in, including mine, by parking in an entry way labelled “no parking”. I spoke to museum security – who didnt have access to a pager along to make an announcement.

I also spoke to ACT Police who couldn;t book him (presumably under the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Regulation 2000, which enables the Australian Road Rules in the ACT. This makes parking in a “no parking” zone an offence.

I called Canberra Connect who can only lodge an incident report actionable the next working day. They couldnt advise whether this issue could be resolved through TAMS enforcement processes.

Out of curiosity, i called a towing company who were powerless without a police declaration of the vehicle being abandoned.

Finally, after tweeting my frustration at the NMA, their media manager got onto someone at the event to help!

Thoughts as to why nothing could be done?

Thanks Comic my problem is that I live life following the old proverb ‘two wrongs do not make a right’ along with my morals and values – prefer to say a prayer that she wont put someone else through it!

I think getting to your unwell child is more important than a outdated sense of values.

Geez, if I park a centimeter out of place it seems like the inspectors are there in a sec. I sometimes wonder if there’s some sort of transponder on my car or something. I wouldn’t be so paranoid if they weren’t out to get me.

You have a set of keys. Next time use them.

Interpret that how you wish.

Would have been pretty simple to solve the issue yourself.

Same to you Scorpio. If people want the be jerk offs and have no consideration, treat them and property the same way. Not their problem if you are blocked by there car? Well not your problem if their car gets a smashed window and rolled down a hill.

Seriously though, did the Police explain why they couldn’t book them. It’s a strict liability offence I thought.

Maybe they’ve got slightly more important things to do?

+1

I have been blocked a couple of times in work carparks, the latest being a woman who drove in behind me as I politely gesticulated to her that I would not have space to get out in an emergency.

She ignored my sign language and I flew out of my vehicle before she walked off to her building.

I said ‘excuse me If there is an emergency with my child who has a heart condition (legit) I wont be able to reach her more quickly’.

The woman replied ‘tough, if people choose to park in this dirt unlined carpark, thats their problem’ as she continued to walk off.

Upon reaching work I was inundated with phone calls (hotline) and two inboxes for urgent matters all day and not had a second to spare for any complaint.

Interesting the woman was in my vintage and my heart extremely sad that anyone could do this type of thing to another person.

Maybe it was private property – I think the police need to be “invited” there before they can book cars.

more important things to do??? blocking about 30 cars in a car park is inexcusable…i would be completely perplexed if nothing was done as well. they seem to tow cars from no parking zones all the time…pretty poor form i think

Ring the Police back and say you have a car you don’t need anymore and would like them to demo the ramming capability of their new Bearcat. Once they’ve done so and ask why you didn’t want your car anymore, just act confused and say “That wasn’t my car.” They can handle the paper work.

Well?

I have no conclusions to share, it was merely to satify my own curiosity. I do not intend to judge anyone else who drives this vehicle, I’m sure most are very good drivers.

Red Ford Territory. Why’s that?

I find that some car makes/models have a greater tendency to attract people that believe the road rules do not apply to them (I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice this). I was just curious if this situation would fit to this correlation.

Best not to rely on others to solve problems.

Smash small rear window, open door, slip into neutral, let off handbrake, push out of the way.

Great idea if the car was a manual and built pre-1985.

yeah cos you totally can’t put any automatics into neutral without a key…

Where’s the Narrabundah tyre slasher when you need them!

Just out of curiosity, what was the make and model of the car blocking the way?

Good reason to justify owning a large bullbar-equipped 4WD for pushing cars out of the way that are parked like this.

Call in and report a bomb in a car with that Rego. It won’t get you out any quicker, but a robot might come and blow up the offending car…
