Enforcing the speed limit on William Hovell Drive? [with poll]

Canberra City Council lacks any planning nous, so it’s easier to just keep lowering the speed limits.

Like the really cool bogus roadworks on the Barton Highway, sure fire way to get motorists to pay attention to real roadwarks, put random signs everywhere.

There was a speed camera there a few days after the change and they are only complaining now?

And still, I don’t understand why the approach they took on Drake Brockman Drive, when the speed limit was lowered from 80 to 60 around the Pegasus Riding School area, isn’t the default approach?

When the limit changed, they stuck nice fluro yellow signs on the speed signs, saying ‘modified speed limit’ (or something to that effect). It was something that immediately caught your eye, and forced you to take another look at the speed limit sign. Saying ‘you should be looking at the speed signs’ is all very nice in a perfect world, but how many people actually do this every day on a road you regularly travel?

A couple of bucks for a bit of plastic cable tied to the sign. It’s not that hard really.

Consultants fee’s probably took up $45,000 of that.

But as to this issue, just so typical of the Liberals, both locally and Federally. Taking cheap shots with no context to appeal to the lowest common denominator (the bulk of the Australian voters) without anyone really countering or holding their comments to account.

I mean to say why does the government need to provide advance warning of a speed limit change? Don’t people look at speed signs when they drive? Also isn’t it now a month later? So people should have been well and truly informed by now so what is the issue with enforcing it? Am surprised no one got caught though, in my experience most still zoom through at break neck speed.

The ridiculous thing is they have turned the safest part of the whole road into an 80 zone… dual carriageway, big median strip dividing the traffic.

The only part that needed to be reduced to 80 was a small stretch at the Coppins Crossing entrance. Reducing the speed from there all the way to Aranda is nonsensical.

Easy, 500 hours to think about it, plan it, do the contract documents, write the ministerials, 2 hours to do the actual work.

For mine, the sense of borderline entrapment is ongoing; by local standards, it just isn’t an 80kmh-grade road. Marked or not, the limits are inconsistent. People will slip up while remaining perfectly safe. The law has a responsibility to be reasonable and consistent. The people running the show disguise their idiocy poorly.

I agree, why would this road have the same limit as Haydon drive, which has 5 sets of traffic lights, 3 uncontrolled intersection’s, bus stops, a school and a university as well as a bike path on it, while William Hovell Drive has the Cotter road, that is it?
