Enforcing the speed limit on William Hovell Drive? [with poll]

The Liberals’ Shadow Minister For Motorists Alistair Coe is taking a swing at the ACT Government deploying a speed camera on William Hovell Drive after the botched speed limit lowering.

“In April, the Canberra Liberals raised concerns that a section of William Hovell Drive was decreased to 80km/h without any advance warning to motorists,” Mr Coe said.

“Yesterday, an ACT Government mobile speed camera van was in the recently reduced 80km/h zone.

“Last month, the Government responded by admitting they made a mistake by failing to give Canberrans notice of the reduction. However, just one month on, they’re now cashing-in on that mistake.

“By already sending a mobile speed camera van to this part of William Hovell Drive is dishonest, and on the verge of entrapment.

The verge of entrapment? The hoohaa about the botched limit lowering was higher profile than any normal notification process.

After all that and with the limit posted should we care what happens to the dozy buggers who get stung?

Canberra City Council lacks any planning nous, so it’s easier to just keep lowering the speed limits.

Like the really cool bogus roadworks on the Barton Highway, sure fire way to get motorists to pay attention to real roadwarks, put random signs everywhere.

A cage of fools!

Ah, so this is the Liberals’ transport policy. Finally!

There was a speed camera there a few days after the change and they are only complaining now?

And still, I don’t understand why the approach they took on Drake Brockman Drive, when the speed limit was lowered from 80 to 60 around the Pegasus Riding School area, isn’t the default approach?

When the limit changed, they stuck nice fluro yellow signs on the speed signs, saying ‘modified speed limit’ (or something to that effect). It was something that immediately caught your eye, and forced you to take another look at the speed limit sign. Saying ‘you should be looking at the speed signs’ is all very nice in a perfect world, but how many people actually do this every day on a road you regularly travel?

A couple of bucks for a bit of plastic cable tied to the sign. It’s not that hard really.

I’m still struggling to figure out how this work had a budget of $52,000, when all that’s happened is that some speed limit signs have been switched, and some new ones installed. I was sure there must have been something else that was involved when I saw that figure, but apparently not.

Consultants fee’s probably took up $45,000 of that.

But as to this issue, just so typical of the Liberals, both locally and Federally. Taking cheap shots with no context to appeal to the lowest common denominator (the bulk of the Australian voters) without anyone really countering or holding their comments to account.

I mean to say why does the government need to provide advance warning of a speed limit change? Don’t people look at speed signs when they drive? Also isn’t it now a month later? So people should have been well and truly informed by now so what is the issue with enforcing it? Am surprised no one got caught though, in my experience most still zoom through at break neck speed.

The ridiculous thing is they have turned the safest part of the whole road into an 80 zone… dual carriageway, big median strip dividing the traffic.

The only part that needed to be reduced to 80 was a small stretch at the Coppins Crossing entrance. Reducing the speed from there all the way to Aranda is nonsensical.

Easy, 500 hours to think about it, plan it, do the contract documents, write the ministerials, 2 hours to do the actual work.

Was there any hoo-haa other than on RA?
(serious question – RA is my only local news source, so I’ve no idea what the great unwashed were being fed.)

For mine, the sense of borderline entrapment is ongoing; by local standards, it just isn’t an 80kmh-grade road. Marked or not, the limits are inconsistent. People will slip up while remaining perfectly safe. The law has a responsibility to be reasonable and consistent. The people running the show disguise their idiocy poorly.

I agree, why would this road have the same limit as Haydon drive, which has 5 sets of traffic lights, 3 uncontrolled intersection’s, bus stops, a school and a university as well as a bike path on it, while William Hovell Drive has the Cotter road, that is it?

I think nearly all the other local media picked it up at some point.

Speaking of verges of entrapment, the cops around the airport have been entraping people from the verge of that roundabout with the part-time traffic lights. I’m not sure if they’re getting people for speeding or some other sin… I’m not even sure what the speed limit is there, I do under 70 and so far haven’t been entrapped. They’ve been out there several evenings this week.

Well I guess the libs would be thrilled to get 41% of the vote.

Lowering the speed limit was pretty retarded. But enforcing the speed limit now that it is clearly marked (and has been a while) it what is supposed to happen.

Politicians are weird creatures.
