Escalator fire in City

A city building has been evacuated so firefighters can investigate an escaltor fire.

ACT Fire & Rescue were called to Moore Street just after 7am after smoke was reported issuing from the escalator.

A seconary search is being conducted to make sure no one is left in the building.

The fire has been extinguished with crews now conducting operations to deal with smoke logging throughout the building.

UPDATE – Firefighters have completed ventilation operations and staff have been permitted to return to the building. Fire was isolated to the escalator motor with damage confined to the motor only. Firefighters will depart the scene shortly.

UPDATE – Crews were notified following an Automatic Fire Alarm at the ACT Health Building on Moore Street, City at 7.03am. Crews are conducting ventilation and air monitoring operations in the six storey building and have isolated the power to the ground floor escalator. Three fire pumpers, the Hazardous Materials Unit, the Breathing Apparatus Van, the Bronto Skylift Hydraulic Platform and two fire Commanders are on scene. Approximately 25 staff remain evacuated from the building.
