Euthanasia again

It’s a happy day in the London Circuit Soviet as Our Chiefly Leader Jon Stanhope once again struts the national stage being all progressive.

A vast array of media is covering Bob Brown’s efforts to overturn the Commonwealth’s ability to overturn Territory legislation.

This in turn allows the Territories to pass laws the Commonwealth fears will anger the fundamentalist Christians whose approval the major parties crave at a national level.

So a dry technical argument becomes all about euthanasia (with gay marriage lurking in the background).

And as the Chief Minister of a Territory close to Sydney and Melbourne Mr Stanhope becomes the progressive champion.

Which he’s really good at.

(We imagine Zed will have something to say later in the week.)

Why not just argue the people of the ACT and NT should have the same rights as those in the states? Forget what laws could be passed. I mean NSW just passed gay adoption and the federal government can do very little to stop it.

+1000 – it’s not about euthanasia, that’s just the current topic the greens have chosen to raise at this point in time. it’s a bloody outrage that ACT and NT can’t enact their laws without fear of them being overturned at the whim of federal government looking for a wedge at the time. why are our laws and rights worth any less than those across the border in queanbeyan??

Euthanasia again? Sigh…

My opinion on this is somewhat influenced by the fact that I worked in palliative care administration a few years ago, my god mother is a palliative care nurse and my step mother is a palliative care volunteer.

I know that every palliative care professional and volunteer I have met has cared about their work and I enjoyed the chance to support them. Most people appreciate and gain value from palliative care, and if I recall correctly, the biggest problems are to do with access for example if you’re living in a remote area or can’t communicate in English. There is also a tiny percentage of pain that can’t be treated and ongoing research is required to address this.

If Bob wants to introduce legalised euthanasia, then I think he is acknowledging that palliative care is not yet perfect and should offer ways in which he intends to improve this situation. Otherwise he’s just solving the problem by killing the patient.

I had a friend who went to a group called “Euthenasia Now!”, but i havent seen her since…..

vg, I’ve already told him that God and not Jesus does the smiting but he won’t listen…

Euthenasia and gay marriage – about time!

No doubt Zed will ask Jesus the Magical Sky Fairy to smite us.

You keep trying that line and no-one bites \.

Maybe if you wrote in English you’d get a nibble

So good to see Bob Brown and Jon Stanhope are fixated on making sure people can die now we’ve done all our climate change thingies to save the planet and keep people alive that little bit longer.

I guess the ‘Live in Canberra’ campaign has taken a turn for the worse…

I can foresee it already… “A visit to Canberra will really be a Killer!”

While I completely agree that the territory laws and law making process should be the equal of the states, I’m concerned Bob Brown has or will turn it into a debate on euthanasia and gay marriage.

Why not just argue the people of the ACT and NT should have the same rights as those in the states? Forget what laws could be passed. I mean NSW just passed gay adoption and the federal government can do very little to stop it.

They might let us have it, but the filter will stop us looking up decent information on euthanasia.

I guess the ‘Live in Canberra’ campaign has taken a turn for the worse…

And the the Commonwealth government makes its own legislation and invokes s109 of the Constitution and its game over.

Fix the roads Jon
