The ACT Government’s Events page has had a revamp and are actively looking for listings so it’s well worth getting on.

Sadly they remain tourism focused and are giving the bird to community activities:

Events must be confirmed, and have a start and end date with approved opening and closing times. Permanent and ongoing events, conventions and trade fairs are all eligible.

Eligible events must fall into one of the following categories:

— Family friendly
— Food and Wine
— Major Events
— Exhibitions
— Festivals and Celebrations
— Markets
— Music
— Sport
— Talks and workshops
— Theatre and dance

Events listed above must be relevant to the leisure tourism market and have the best potential to attract interstate visitation.

— Conventions
— Community

Eligible community events are large scale stand alone public events specially targeting audiences or attendances from the broader Canberra community. School fetes, church fairs, fundraisers and regular club events are ineligible for listing on www.events.act.gov.au

We would, however, counsel event organisers to give us a heads up too!

UPDATE 29/06/12 13:19: Andrew Barr is celebrating the revamped platform:

It will be accessible by community, government, event planners/organisers, and all consumers, including Canberrans and local, national and international visitors. The website also contains essential information for event organisers, including funding and grant opportunities.

Canberra and our surrounding region boasts a vibrant range of events, which offers locals and interstate visitors a wide choice of unique experiences to suit all interests throughout the year.

The ACT Labor Government is committed to supporting quality events. The new website is another example of the support we are providing to inform the local community, and to event organisers to promote their events to the public.

The new website has resulted in significant cost savings and a reduction in production times because it leverages existing technology infrastructure used in the visitcanberra.com.au website. This infrastructure also allows event information to be distributed across a broad spectrum of distribution channels, such as to other tourism and event websites, including australia.com

Wouldn’t you think that, having signed up to the National Arts and Disability Strategy, and patted their own backs on all sorts of inclusiveness (such as the plans for a children’s playground for disabled kids) the ACT Government would have ensured that its “events” website would be accessible? But no – wave tool brings up accessibility errors. Lift your game, Joy Burch and Katie Gallagher!
