Celebrate love and equality this weekend at YES!Fest

| Lachlan Roberts

To celebrate love, equality and the first anniversary of Australians voting “Yes” to marriage equality, Canberra will host its own mini glitter-filled mardi gras street party tomorrow (17 November) in the heart of the city centre.

Yes!Fest is set to take over Braddon, kicking off with a family-friendly picnic and community fair with vibrant street performances, live music, beverages and food trucks on Lonsdale Street.

In addition to music, food and street art, the festival will feature an LGBTIQ+ history walk produced by Yen Eriksen, where Canberrans can learn about the history of the equality movement.

Yes!Fest Chairperson Jacob White is expecting Canberrans to turn out in force to celebrate marriage equality. The ACT did record the highest ‘yes’ vote in the survey after all.

“This event is to celebrate all the work our community put in to make marriage equality a reality,” Mr White said. “We want to celebrate the solidarity that the whole Canberra community showed during the postal survey. The loudest YES! in the country”

Bentspoke and Hopscotch will be bringing their bars to the street serving ‘The Frenzy’ – ‘a raspberry wheat beer with a bright deep pink hue especially brewed for the festival, while Indigenous drag queens and DJs get the party started.

There will even be a special YES!Fest “gaytime” ice-cream from Braddon dessert laboratory Mr Frugii.

Festivities kick off at 3 pm and will party on late into the night. For further details, including a full timetable and map, are available here.
