The 2022 Dragon Boat Festival celebration is set to take over the shores and waters of Lake Burley Griffin this Saturday (04 June).

The Dragon Boat Festival is an annual event that brings families, friends, and communities together to enjoy food, sport and entertainment. On this Saturday, the Community Culture Service will hold the celebration of Dragon Boat Festival at the Southern Cross Yacht Club front Lawn in Yarralumla, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.

It is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the rich cultural traditions of Canberra’s local community, as well as strengthen the harmony and inclusivity that defines the capital city.

At the event, cultural game stalls and activities will entertain families for the whole day and there will be plenty of food as well. The organiser prepared traditional Chinese rice balls called the Zongzi again for food lovers on this year’s celebration. There will be dragon boats racing and immersive live performances, include lion dancing, traditional instruments and artworks, etc. Families are welcome to jump in the display boat to feel the traditional sport and its rich culture.

CMS FM91.1 Chinese Voice Program Coordinator Wenjin Zhou said it was hard for family and friends to share traditions and celebrate culture through the pandemic, but this Saturday event will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to go out for beautiful outdoor community activities. This is an event designed not only to celebrate the community of keen dragon boaters in the ACT, but also to share the history of this sport and its Chinese origins.

Discovery Trip
All visitors will receive a discovery map at entrance, showing the game on each stall. Visit each stall to join culture games and collect a lucky stamp. Collect all stamps to redeem a free gift. All games are free.

Dragon Boat Racing
The Dragon boat competition will run from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Teams from the Dragon Boat ACT will race on the Lake Burley Griffin. It’s a celebration of both dragon boating as a sport, as well as its cultural significance for the Chinese community.
