Brindabella Series

Oliver Owens – EASS Award Winner

Inspired by the landscapes of the Brindabella range, Brindabella Series explores the relationships humans share with place through an abstracted depiction of landscape.

The act of viewing landscape is a highly psychological one, involving complex information reception and analysis based on sensory immersions and the presence of subjective expectations or memories. This process has the capacity to shape our understanding and relationship to place by forming conceptions such as beauty, value or safety. It is these effects and conceptions which underly this series.

The ceramic vessels, by capturing the light and colour qualities of the land and sky of the Brindabellas, distil the essence of a place characterised by eucalypt forests, rock formations and expansive mountain skylines. Simultaneously it relies on viewers’ psychological processes which form conceptions of the natural world to generate its meaning, asking those viewers to consider their relationships to the places they care about.

Exhibition dates: From 14 October to 27 November 2022.
