Exploring one of the most colourful times in Australian history, the arrival of the Greeks!
Igniting memories of a story that millions of Australians can relate to, Burger pays tribute to her Greek migrant family and hard-working, fun loving larrikin father Luke who defied all odds. From early morning deliveries for the family bakery at age seven, down opal mines in Coober Pedy at age sixteen and opening a chain of discount supermarkets in Adelaide, Luke’s Road was not one for the faint-hearted. His unrelenting determination to build a successful life is comical and dramatic; as he pushes through like an unstoppable force and is willing to sacrifice everything for his family.
Premiering to a sell-out Adelaide Cabaret Festival season, nominated for a Helpmann Academy Award and winner of the inaugural Frank Ford Award at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe, this critically acclaimed work conveys an incredible true story through original music written & performed by Burger alongside a local community choir. You’ll traverse 100 years from Russia to the Australian outback, following the hardship, ingenuity, tragedy, and triumph present in all migrants’ stories. Brought to life with Burger’s music played by a live band and bouzouki player, Michaela tells her family story with poignancy, heart and comical aplomb.
Described by Australia’s leading lady of cabaret Kate Ceberano as an “asset to the cabaret community” come join Michaela for an evening of song and laughter, memories and the love of family.
Michaela Burger is also the recipient of the award for Best Cabaret Adelaide Fringe 2016 and is a Helpmann Award two-time nominee for Best Cabaret Performer. In addition to touring extensively with her hit show Exposing Edith (the life and songs of Edith Piaf), her most recent performing credits include Apocalypse Meow; Meow Meow (Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne), Rumpelstiltskin (Southbank London/State Theatre SA/Windmill Co.) Can You hear Colour? (Patch Theatre/2018 Adelaide Festival), and Brel: The Immortal Troubadour (Adelaide Cabaret Festival).
