Leopard Beach - omar Musa

Leopard Beach – omar Musa

An exhibition & performance by Omar Musa

Is escapism merely a distraction, a suppressant, a fearful response to the brutal, banal reality of our lives? Or is it expansive, something that can be used to set the templates for social/environmental change and imagine worlds in the way they could be?

These are questions explored by local Queanbeyan artist, Omar Musa, in his latest exhibition/performance, Welcome to Leopard Beach

Musa focuses on longing and escapism in a way that is poetic, moving and mostly tongue-in-cheek.

“Leopard Beach is a place I invented in my head to escape to once, when I was feeling depressed”, Musa says. “In Leopard Beach, the weather is sweet as a kiss. It is plastic free, hater free and 100% body positive!”

According to Musa, this wonderland flourishes with the endangered clouded leopard of Borneo alongside an ocean full of fish, and free-flowing laksa.

Combining poetry and pop iconography with techniques learned back in his homeland of Borneo, East Malaysia, Musa has made woodcuts which are a popular artform, especially in the punk rock scene.

He invites us all to go visit his tropical little utopia, and enjoy a night of creativity complemented by noodle soup and pineapple juice.

DJ Roshambo will be playing a tropical themed music set. Musa will be doing a 30 min set of poetry and music. The will be catered and there will be pina coladas.
