Everyone Loves Julia Says The Canberra Times!

The Canberra Times is very enthusiastic about Julia Gillard’s visit to a Quangers shopping centre to kiss babies and spread the pixie dust of recent celebrity.

According to Ross Peake and Danielle Cronin dyed in the wool Liberals voters were pledging undying loyalty to our new ginger over-lord.

Oddly enough no mention at all of the angry tobacconist so upset by the recent excise rises (an under-reported contributor to the collapse of Kevin Rudd’s popular support along with the alco-pop taxes) that he had to be removed, and no mention of the National’s candidate for Eden Monaro David Gazzard sneaking in for a sneaky grip and greet on camera.

Nahh, let’s stick to sunshine and lollypops.

We’re a gullible lot. Kevin 07 was the New Messiah. A couple of dips in the polls and he’s gone, largely unlamented. Now Julia is the new New Messiah, even though she was the old Messiah’s understudy. She will backpedal a bit with the miners, talk a lot about the ETS, then call the election and cruise to an easy win during the honeymoon period. Then the cycle will repeat, as it does in NSW.

Thankyou, thankyou, I’ll be here all night.

Yes, that easy election victory was amazing hey?

I’m with you there, although I don’t agree that Abbott has been a great opposition leader. A successful leader will get his party elected by exposing the government’s faults. Abbott has highlighted Labor’s weaknesses well, but even a conservative like me couldn’t vote for someone as strident and divisive as he is.

I understand your view that the ‘whatever it takes’ [to get/keep power] approach is the only rational course in politics today. I was just lamenting that fact is all.

That’s what you get if the nation’s leader is chosen in a Chinese restaurant in Sussex St.

It’s going to be hard to be an effective leader in this country if a swing in the polls can see you thrown out on 12 hours notice.

“A swing”. You make some reasonable points, but it wasn’t as if it was a single poll that preceded Rudd’s downfall. It was months of downturn with no apparent light at the end of an increasingly dark tunnel.

Politics is a dirty game and while I can certainly understand some of the critical comments of removing Rudd and his replacement I think it had to be done if the ALP wanted to improve its chances of winning the next election. Surely this is Plan A for both of our major political parties; that is, to win elections.

Over the weekend I was chatting about the Gillard rise and a few people mentioned to me they thought it was horrible the way the ALP removed Rudd. I put forward the theory that Tony Abbott, for all his faults, has so far been a far greater opposition leader than anyone could have ever imagined and the possibility of the ALP losing the election was very, very real. A few agreed, a few didn’t but could at least see my point.

Therefore, if the ALP felt they had a better chance of winning the election with Gillard at the helm then, by definition, their swift action was not only the right course for the party, but also very well handled given there was, relatively speaking, no nasty build up to the title fight.

However, I was amazed that these detractors thought the ALP should have left Rudd in charge for the next election; if he lost, then it would be okay to change leaders. I’m not sure what planet these guys are on, but find me a political party that knowingly goes into an election campaign with a leader that is on the nose with the public of Australia and I will show a bunch of numpties. Presumably these same people have already forgotten the accepted theory that Costello would have been a better bet for the Coalition than Howard in 2007. Look where the right thing to do by your leader got them. Look up “examples of misplaced loyalty” in your Politics 101 text book and the Coalition’s 2007 campaign is front and centre on the first page.

In regards to a gullible electorate, well, from where I sit I would apply the same theory to explain 11 years of Howard rule.

Gillard has the top job for now. It is now up to her to prove her critics wrong and to answer the many questions, much like yours, that she will face.

In all of this, though, we still haven’t really been given much else from Tony Abbott other than the ALP are no good. He’s done that incredibly well, it must be said, but I’m not sure who is more scared of him actually announcing policies to take to an election – me or him!

Whe you have had as much to do with the Welsh as I have, then you’ll understand…

Until then, be wary of Fanta Pants bearing gifts…….

Everyone in qtown loves Julia? When did people in quangers get the right to vote??! There should be laws to prevent that sorta thing.. especially if they help deliver us 3 more years of the same sht.

I don’t know much about Gillard, but her sanity with regard to sustainable population has got my attention already. All the other pollys seem to think exponential growth is fool proof.

Sucked in. As with all her other pronouncements, Julia is restating her own AND Kevin’s policies as devised, signed and announced by Rudd/Gillard. Rudd did NOT refer to a population of 36 million. And when he created the “population minister” position, he actually alluded to sustainability as part of the mix in the announcement. Totally dishonest for Gillard to pretend that she is doing anything other than recycling and applying spin. Oh – with a bit of dogwhistle. OR pretending to debunk policies she herself devised, endorsed and promoted. Frankly, why depose a leader if there is no substantial shift in policy or direction?

I have no idea who he is still… I was keen to vote greens, but the local greens have disillusioned me… there doesn’t seem to be much happening that would be any different if we didn’t have a record number of green MLAs.

She has the political nous of Howard, the charm of Hawke and the wit of Keating. What’s not to like.

So when is going to play at full forward? Perhaps we need Barry Hall to thump someone (again) so as to make a position available in the starting line up..

On what grounds have you formed that opinion?

Gut feeling. Instinct. I have nothing to back it up, honestly.

I don’t know Julia at a personal level, but her “grub” statement against Abbot is the highlight of what I know her by.

Witty, yes, but I hope she doesn’t turn into Mark Latham II.

Persons that are liked by the majority (of our nation) is not necessarily the same person one would prefer as the leader of a country, to fight for our interest on the world stage.

Fair enough.

I’m just surprised by the number of people who have formed seemingly concrete opinions on her ability to do the job when she’s only held the position for a few days.

I doubt she will be a Latham Mk2. I think she deserves a bit more credit than that, haha.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has what it takes to defeat the right. Enough said.

Thumper: Well, if you want to get to know Andrew Leigh, the Fraser candidate, there’s always the option of reading his six years of blog posts, or his academic research, op-eds and radio spots… 😉

(Quite a bit more insight than we usually get with a new candidate, you must admit).

I think Julia is tough, smart, realistic, a great speaker and a fantastic representative for Australia on the world stage.

I just hope she doesn’t get sucked into right wing policies on asylum seekers etc in order to appear as tough as Tony Abbot…

Rein in your… past angst against Julia’s forefathers!

Australia may have been called “New South WALES” in history, but I do not think it is warranted at this point in time!

I would respect/hope Julia to bring to fruition the value of all Australian people, and not just the value of her ancestors. Your quotations are the nightmares from the past that should not befall on the children of our future!

I don’t think there is too much to worry about. She follows AFL and isn’t a member of the Church of Seventh Day Repressionists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacky_Wales

There’s lollipops? Hurray for our ginger overlord!!!

Nom nom nom nom nom…

Everyone loves a change, penning their hope for something better. It’s human nature. But, for better or for WORSE is the risk that seems to slip past a lot of people.

In hind sight I’m having second thoughts on whether removing Johnny was a good idea. I guess we’ll never know. Julia seems popular local, but can she command the world stage? Since you raised that issue, JB, I have to gloat that I’ve quit smoking in protest of the excise hike. 🙂 Thank you Mr Rudd.
