The ABC has word that the Member for Canberra, Gai Brodtmann, is kicking off an inquiry by the National Capital and External Territories Committee into Canberra’s diplomatic estates.

Ms Brodtmann says its the first time an inquiry of this nature has been held.

“It’ll particularly focus on the roles of the NCA and the Department of Foreign Affairs as well as the ACT Government and other relevant agencies,” she said.

“It will also be forecasting levels of demand and supply, the suitability of current property types and other options to meet the different needs of diplomatic missions, as well as locations for future diplomatic estates.”

Ms Brodtmann says the committee will examine all options.

“Some people have spoken to me about the possibilities of sub-divisions, of strata title arrangements, of using existing commercial opportunities as well as possible greenfields,” she said.

“They are all elements that we will be exploring through this inquiry.”

I thought all you needed to do to build an Embassy was to pitch a couple of tents and light a fire on some vacant land.

It seems to work for some people and the NCA, Federal Government or ACT government have not objected or attempted to shut them down..

Based on the nature of some of the objections that have been raised with the NCA about the proposal for additional embassies in Yarralumla, the question has to be asked is this inquiry because the racists and NIMBY’s in Yarralumla have more power than those elsewhere?

Well Gai is a resident of Yarralumla and has a vested interest in seeing it’s exclusivity maintained. Given the new diplomatic residences will be taken up by ‘not our type of people’ it’s hardly surprising that spurious reasons are being dreamt up to stop this proposed development.

Can it be extended to cover diplomatic driving and parking habits?
