This in from a normally reliable source, we await comment from ACT Policing.

— Incident occurred at the dancefloor\bar indoors at Erindale Vikings (P3?) on Friday night (27 May 2011).

— Group of drunk late teens\early 20s guys setting of fireworks inside.

— Were asked to leave by Security, but did not.

— Were not escorted out immediately, as Security guard either disappeared entirely or went to get others. No further de-escalation occurred (such as turning off lights\turning off music, etc)

— Continued to set off fireworks, threw into groups of patrons, one chairs, setting fire to at least one patron’s shoes.

— Her partner began having angry words with the firework-people near the bar area.

— Someone through a glass at him, broke his cheekbone, extensive eye injuries due to glass in eye and damage to tendons\muscles of the eye. Potential permanent eye damage, may require surgical intervention.

— Further brawl broke out, someone (most likely the glass thrower) ran out of the Club.

— Investigation continues, but nobody has provided a description of the glass-thrower. Club staff have been unhelpful in providing information to the victim.

— Police Incident Reference number is 4549695

— Any information should be provided to Crimestoppers (Ph 1800 333 000 or anonymously online at https://act.crimestoppers.com.au/cs/report_a_crime/online_reporting_form.jsp) or to ACT Policing, in relation to the above reference number.

This response from ACT Policing:

ACT Policing responded to an incident at the Erindale Vikings clib where a patron sustained an injury to his eye.

We are unable to comment further as it is an active investigation. However it is safe to say that the patron did not ‘lose an eye’.

Erindale has no image any more, used to be a good place to spend an evening, dining etc, but now has gone to the dogs because of cowardly idiots like these.

So this sort of thing happens frequently at Erindale?

Erindale has always had a reputation.

In the 80s and early 90s, it was known as the meat market on Friday/Saturday nights for example.

There have also been many fights over the years also.

This incident, is not exactly a new incident to THIS club.

I’m definitely going next Friday.

Glassing should be up there on the punishment scale with Rape, Attempted murder, Pedophilia and barracking for Collingwood.

+1 Friends shouldn’t let friends support Collingwood

As for the identities of these heroes, Erindale Vikings has traditionally been patronised by fairly local clientele – chances are someone will know someone who can finger these clowns. Then it’ll be up to our justice system to sort it out. Sigh.

Very. It’s not the place to go for a pleasant evening anymore, even during the day you can be abused by just walking past someone (my fault for smiling and saying hi to an indigenous person). Unless something is done, more businesses at Erindale will be lost as – from what I am told by a couple of business owners – customers, diners, patrons are going elsewhere.

Having worked for several large clubs as a Duty Manager (never Vikings group) I am struggling to understand why the police had not already been called in when the fireworks were set off the first time ??? Or when they refused to leave the club ???? It should NEVER have reached the point where it turned into a fight. How did these clowns manage to consume enough alcohol to get so ‘out of control’ in the first place?

Too many questions and not enough facts here yet, but it does not reflect well on the club.

And the club has shown no balls either.

Exactly my point. Last time I checked, you have to be a verified member of the club or have submitted your contact information at the entrance. Why didn’t the club bar the door and go through each punter until the identities of the group, including the member that bolted, were narrowed down and submitted to the police.

Clubs have to be very aware of their public image and I think Erindale has dropped the ball here.

I wonder if the glass thrower would have have committed such a cowardly act had his little ‘playmates’ not been around? The glass thrower well he’s a certified oxygen thief, but the ‘mates’ who stood by watched what happened, are equally pathetic. It makes you wonder what gutter they were raised in.

Lets hope the Police catch this cowardly little boy and justice is well and truely served.

Glassing should be up there on the punishment scale with Rape, Attempted murder, Pedophilia and barracking for Collingwood.

As mentioned already, it’s a cowards act and needs to be made an example of. I would happily and without hesitation, disown even my best mates if I knew they had done this, it’s damn low, damn damn low.

Glassing is the last-resort dog move of cowards who shouldn’t be allowed to drink in public, and protecting or defending a person who becomes a danger to others when drunk is a total failure of human sympathy.

Hurling glassware at someone’s eyes, and breaking their face so hard it drops them to the ground is the kind of irresponsible behaviour that can potentially end a life or destroy a person’s ability to work.
I’m pretty certain the victim didn’t do anything to justify being disfigured, so if you know something, say something.

Hell, just click this link and report it to Crimestoppers anonymously.

On the subject of glassing-related violence:
Ideally if someone can’t be trusted with glassware you keep that person drinking out of tippee-cups, but to minimise damage across the population you can follow the lead of the AHA in Western Australia and either push licensees to use tempered glassware, or go with Edinburgh\Glasgow’s method and make a permanent ban on all shatterable or injurious glassware a part of your liquor licensing condition.

My brother lives in that area, and I would rather not be drinking out of a plastic cup when I visit.

Sounds like you’d be lucky to leave the place without needing to drink through a straw!

Struggling to understand why the staff couldn’t have intervened. Was it that a large group of young guys were too threatening to the generally understaffed/overworked bar staff? Where was the manager during all this? I’m pretty sure the Erindale club has more than one bouncer employed on a Friday night.

I hope for the victim’s sake somebody comes forward to catch the idiot who threw his glass, the law needs to be brought down hard on this glassing thing. My brother lives in that area, and I would rather not be drinking out of a plastic cup when I visit.
