Faiders for the wooden spoon?

League Unlimited have mixed news for Canberra Raiders fans in their preview of the 2007 season:

The Canberra Raiders are the team widely accepted by the uninformed media and fans of other teams to run dead last in 2007 due to a number of factors… sections of the Sydney media have already labeled the Raiders as the Titanic of the NRL.

But there are some kinder words as the article unfolds:

Canberra has superb depth in the forwards to cover for injuries to every player in the pack. The Raiders have two NRL quality forward packs… There is also the Raiders home ground advantage which is good for a four wins a year, especially in winter where Canberra is the coldest home ground in the NRL. If the Raiders can turn Canberra Stadium into the graveyard it used to be, they’ll be very tough to beat on a Saturday in near freezing conditions. Let’s just hope we get a bit of snow this year… Whilst the Raiders probably won’t make the top eight, they have been death ridden for years and 2007 is no exception, but the enthusiasm levels should be at an all time high and I expect the players to be hungry on a weekly basis and with so many good forwards, form will play a big part in the strategy of Neil Henry.

Likely finish: 9th

Over to all you experts.

You’re the one who was making comparisons with crowd attendance at NRL games. The point is it’s comparing apples with oranges, and Canberra will never get an A-League side.

The game so boring the crowd needs to punch each other to stay awake.

Just what canberra needs.

no actually, no-one said cosmos, or anything else. and it isn’t being run in winter, so what’s your point? if you have an aversion to football, that’s your problem, but the wondrous thing about the a-league is that it has served to cohere the once disparate ethnic enclaves into a single supporter group. and that is in year two of its fledgling existence.

wake up ralph, get into the current century and be proud of the acheivements of football in ‘your’ country. we don’t pretend to compete with the serie a, epl or others. never will, that;s not the intent, but it’s a truly world game and we will develop our own culture of football.

be a part of it and enjoy it. or pipe down and stick to what you know…

I also guarantee A-League gate takings wouldn’t be so rosy if they were running the comp during winter up against AFL and NRL. A-League is also a network of one town teams.

The standard of wogball in the A-League is abysmal compared to the Euro comps.

Mmmmmmm, great thinking Einstein.

Did somebody say Cosmos? Did somebody say Cannons?

Without a network of licensed clubs for financial backing or large corporate $$$$ no A-League for Canberra!

Let’s banish this inanity and get a real football team in the territory – the A-league beckons…

What has the average home gate been for the boredom machine in the last couple years? The A-league had average gates of 12-14 thousand this season. Even NZ got some reasonable numbers sometimes…

The quiet achievers… They will do far better than the experts predict. A finals finish would be the ultimate baclflip for the so-called experts. Go Raiders!!!

They are permanently under rated – but come winter, no team wants to come to Canberra to play, and the 2 premiership points become far easier. Especially if its a night game.

All I want this year is the Raiders to beat Souths twice…

for all us problem gamblers who feel some sense of “support the local team”… centrebet have a ripper afl-nrl premiership double book. it’s a ripper because the raiderettes have such long odds that the double with any afl team yields odds that look like phone numbers. well, 1940s phone numbers but phone numbers nonetheless.

Raiders will go all right. Dobson was an absolute revelation for the Catalans Dragons and then Wigan last year.

OK, I would be happier if Schif was still around, but everyone else who left last year is covered by any of the new signings or the kids coming through. I got $3.50 on the Raiders making the 8 – and with a heap of Monday night games expected, Bruce Stadium will become a winter graveyard again!

Raiders? who are they 🙂

Wooden spoon will be a battle between the Panthers and Titans.

Raiders will make the top eight.
