The Fair Work Ombudsman is touting a $65,000 haul of backpay they’ve squeezed out of gouging employers around Canberra.

Here are the headline cases:

    — $15,000 for a Woden hairdresser who was underpaid penalty rates and allowances.
    — A Fyshwick cashier has been back-paid $9900 after she was underpaid the minimum hourly rate.
    — A Manuka real estate agent was back-paid $9100 after she was underpaid the minimum hourly rate and not paid her annual leave entitlements.
    — $8000 for a Tuggeranong manager underpaid annual leave and long service leave,
    — $6200 for a Canberra cleaner underpaid the minimum hourly rate and annual leave entitlements,
    — $6200 for a Belconnen office worker underpaid annual leave and long service leave,
    — $5000 for a Canberra draftsperson underpaid severance entitlements.

I am surprised the FWO has had such success. A young person I worked with had major issues (culminating in an unfair dismissal) and the FWO seemed fairly toothless. Well-intentioned, but toothless.

subscribe to their updates (via fwo.gov.au) it seems that they get back tens of thousands on a daily basis.

When employers can’t get people to work for them at the rates they offer, they scream blue murder until the government lets them import cheaper workers from overseas. Which is what many of them are doing.

🙂 Damn fine! I hope they fine the bastards who exploited robbed these people within an inch of their miserable lives.

Hair dressing is already one of the poorest paying industries – ripping someone off to the tune of 15K is disgraceful. I really wish the FWO would name and shame.

I cannot believe my hard-earned taxes are being paid to bully and harass employers who are after nothing more than a fair go. Since when is it the government’s job to assume the role of whinger for people too weak to stand up for their own rights?

Don’t like your pay? Resign! Don’t like your conditions? Leave! If you, the workers of Straya don’t let the bosses know what you are prepared to put up with, how are they supposed to know where to draw the line? Eventually the bosses will run out of workers and then they’ll start paying proper money for a proper day’s work.

Until then, I assume this organisation of fat cats and lawyers will continue to pick on sole traders and struggling businesses who, for heaven’s sake, are already having trouble paying the lease on the Merc and finding tradesmen for the McMansion in Nicholls.
