Farewell to Tu Pham - The Auditor-General

Today the ACT Auditor-General Tu Pham has delivered her Annual Report which contains the sad new that she’s passing the baton.

Looking ahead, the Audit Office will continue to work hard to meet the high expectations of the Legislative Assembly and community, deliver its planned audit programs within budget constraints, and maintain its capacity to independently promote accountability and scrutinise the spending of public money.

My term as Auditor-General ends in March 2011. As this is my last annual report, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the people I have been fortunate to work with, including my management team and all of the great staff at the Audit Office, Chief Executives and staff from the various agencies, Members of the Legislative Assembly and my colleagues in other Audit Offices.

I believe that my work over the last seven years has built a strong foundation for the Audit Office to discharge its functions efficiently and effectively and to earn the confidence of the Legislative Assembly and the general community. The Audit Office should be justifiably proud of its performance and I believe that it is well positioned to move forward under the new leadership of the next Auditor-General.

As I leave this position, I will take many fond memories with me. I am grateful and honoured to have had the privilege of serving the Legislative Assembly and the ACT community. I extend my very best wishes to all staff in the Office and the next Auditor-General for many successful and rewarding years ahead.

After seven long years of trying to inject some rigour and good practice into the ACT Government we wish her all the best. Here’s some of her greatest hits.

No, that’s just your dog whistle, boy.

WMC, you’re still out of step with the rest of the world (or alternatively, the only one in step).

*yawn*

Yes, yes, you’re all right and I’m wrong. She said bad things about Stanhopeless and you heard he doesn’t like her so she must be teh most bestest Auditor-General evah. I bow to your obvious expertise.

When did you start with the ANAO?

Guess I’m the only one who thought her findings and recommendations tended toward the shrill.

We will definitely be the poorer for losing you, Tu.

I have an awful feeling that Stanhope, aided and abetted by Corbell, will try to fill the position with someone less competent and fearless than you.

Jon and Simon, keep your sticky, mucky fingers out of the selection process. We desperately need someone with the same talents and ethics as Tu.

Congratulations, Tu Pham! You epitomise all that’s best in public servants. You’ll be sorely missed by everyone except the government.

The epitome of “frank and fearless advice”. Well done Tu Pham!

Her position is a statutory position with a 7 year term that cannot be renewed, so she still has 5 months to annoy Stanhope a bit more. Though having the minority government will help when appointing the next auditor-general, the veto powers of the public accounts committee should prevent the government appointing a sympathetic replacement.

Tu Pham,

You have done a great job with a secretive assembly and with unwarranted criticism.

Thank you for one of the few shreds of light shone into a regime as secretive (and illegitimate) as North Korea.

I have been trying to see a copy of the Chief Minister, his wife and parties tour of Japan, Canada and the USA in 2005. What did they do, what did it cost? Despite being reffered to this report by the Chief Minister it has never been made available. Wayne Berry told me (in his capacity as then speaker) he would forward it when available. Still waiting…dont expect Rattenbury to require Stanhope to be accountable to the assembly or voters of the ACT for the money he spends on his families (and selfs) overseas holidays.

Also would like to see a copy of the legal advise Stanhope used to challenge the bush fire inquest, we are bright enough to pay for it, too stupid to read it.

Transparency, no way in the illegitimate ACT.

Tu Pham,

The people of the ACT will be at a loss without you.
Thank you for your frank & fearless reports.

Your successor will have a hard act to follow
