Faulkner sent to conduct mass executions in Defence

In March we discussed Defence’s dangerous and stupid leaking of its dangerous and stupid investigations into its own minister.

You will have all heard that the Minister got tripped up by his own largely unrelated piece of stupidity yesterday and was forced to fall on his sword.

We’ve just had word that Senator the Hon John Faulkner of the dodgy combover and retro glass frames is being sent to sort the bastards out.

I think the ratlike ones in Defence will soon wish they’d held onto Ftizgibbon.

There’s talk of a lesbian mafia but that’s another thread….

I only believe in gay marriage when both chicks are hot.

Defence is heavily protestant. Has there been a sectarian mindset against certain ministers? Just a thought. I think FAulkner is a proddy isn’t he? May bode well …

You are joking, aren’t you? Maybe 50 years ago, but now?

Yes. Now. I’ve seen outrageous sectarianism in action in the APS in the last few years …

LOL. I’ve worked in the DMO and Defence (as a civvie and in the military) for several years. Never seen or heard anything that even remotely resembles sectarianism. Unless you call certain elements of the ADF calling the war in Afghanistan and Iraq ‘the Crusades’ that is. There’s talk of a lesbian mafia but that’s another thread….

for ten dollar, doubtless may would love him long time…

faulkner may have kicked a few heads in estimates but i’d guess it will be vastly different in the opposite chair…

…love interest in China” – who’d do him?

Am I the only one who thinks that Department is like the Defence against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts? Why would anyone want this Ministry? It’s cursed…

I kindly request he does us a favour and starts in the Labor Party room..

It’s a Masonic plot I tells ya… Or the Exclusive Bretheren.

Rumours in the gossip media today that Fitzgibbon actually resigned because certain tales of a love interest in China were about to surface …

Mostly that this one is going to have particularly large impacts on a major employer in the region.

The Raiders really miss Ros Kelly. Sob

May the bullets not miss those that deserve the shot to the back of the head……….

Very true, but that was a long time ago, almost twenty years now.

Jesus, I’m old.

And when a Department stuffs up, it is the Minister that gets the boot, not the Senior Executives responsible for administering the department.

Unless you worked for Ros Kelly, who virtually killed off the convention of Ministerial responsibility in the early 1990’s.

Johnboy, you might need to start a clock to tick over changes in DoD in the coming months

chinese proverb in a thread about fitzgibbon? gold. pure gold. May you live in interesting times…

Also – “be careful what you wish for, as it may come true”…

That’s what The Concat is for. Although it seems to be broken today.

Hmm? No, Nelson replaced Hill as “Minister for Defence” – which is the first banana Defence Minister.

Brendan was only the second or third string defence minister at the time.

I don’t think defence is ready for a woman. When I was there I wasn’t allowed to be ‘Ms’ as that was reserved for women in management. They are still struggling with gender issues at DoD.

Faulkner or Gillard are about the only ones with the balls to take on Defence and not end up spat out with political career in tatters.

Or Penny Wong.

And I don’t think Nelson can lay claim to any lasting fame for his Defence ministry – some pretty hocum decisions came out of that period didn’t they?

Brendan Nelson is a more recent example who was able to flame out separately to his time as Defence Minister.

“Defence was certainly not a dead end for Beazley who was widely considered a very capable minister and (from what I’ve heard) was well liked throughout the department.”

Defence was certainly not a dead end for Beazley who was widely considered a very capable minister and (from what I’ve heard) was well liked throughout the department.

Beazley faded out later, but not because of his six years as Defence minister.

Dog bites tail, tail comes back uglier and with less hair.

Aren’t publics servants, defence personnel etc supposed to serve the government and not just the people we like.

The Public Service exists to serve the needs of the Public Service. Ministers change on an all too regular basis, the PS breaks them in, makes sure they don’t make a mess of their little PS empire and spits them out into promotion up the cabinet ladder or political obscurity. And when a Department stuffs up, it is the Minister that gets the boot, not the Senior Executives responsible for administering the department.

DoD has a bit of a history of being a dead end for ministers.

John Moore, Ian MacLachlan, Peter Reith and Robert Hill all faded into political obscurity during or after their time in the portfolio. Now Joel Fitzgibbons has bought it (through his own doing mind you, not that of the DoD). John will no doubt go in, make some blustery speeches about reform and modernisation, buy some new submarines/tanks/planes/helecopters that don’t work and be shuffled off elsewhere in a year or two.

When a Department gets behind their minister, it is usually to knife them in the back…

This is going to be fun to watch, but not so much fun for those inside DoD. I watch with interest to see how Faulkner gets along with his team…

Faulkner or Gillard are about the only ones with the balls to take on Defence and not end up spat out with political career in tatters.

APS are meant to serve pollies, but pollies are meant to be above board and not trying to hook up rellies with APS work.

I hope Faulkner gives Defence a chance and doesn’t just march in there and start telling them off on day one. Ministers in other Depts work with their Depts, and dont’ go out publically complaining bout them the whole time.

Yep, Defence have been a bit too clever for their own good. Faulkner was the scourge of dodgy dealing departments in Senate Estimates, and he’ll be well worded up on who and what to look at. My money’s definitely on the Senator.

He’s just the person to put the salts through that rabble

As the Chinese proverb goes, this shall be interesting times.

Johnboy, you might need to start a clock to tick over changes in DoD in the coming months

It’s okay, defence was cleared by its own internal investigation of doing anything wrong – and what’s could be reliable and impartial than an internal investigation?

Faulkner has always struck me as a fellow who doesn’t take crap from anyone – that was certainly the impression he gave during senate estimates when he was in opposition. Be interesting to see if this shakes things up a bit.
