Federal Golf Club Land Sale

According to the Canberra Times, the Federal Golf Club in in Red Hill is preparing to sell off 4 hectares of primo land for housing. This has property developers circling the ailing club like sharks, while the Red Hill NIMBYs are up in arms.

Federal is a great golf course and club (I actually had my wedding reception there), and its unfortunate to see it struggling. So is selling off land the start of a slow decline, and just postponing the inevitable? I guess they are just trying to keep it running until la nina arrives.

Yeah I heard the bleating hearts from Garran say something that they will man the barricades and fight to the death. Was it the same guy who opposed helicopter flights to the Hospital?

Even more reason for it to happen then!

Poor little rich people being inconvenienced by progress.

This is never going to happen. There is no way the highly organised residents of Deakin, Hughes, Red Hill and Garran will let the horror of urban infill wash against their back fences. The traffic! The noise! The burden on creaking infrastructure!

Affordable housing in Red Hill? Ha! 🙂

I wonder if we’ll hear any bleating about ‘affordable housing’?

It it nice flat ground to set up their shipping containers?

would it? why?

Hard as it is for me to agree with a Roman, nevertheless I second Aurelius’ proposal: “they should return it to the community”.

-the original community. It would be a perfect site for the *new* Aboriginal Embassy.

Totally agree with Growling Ferret and others here. Makes sense to sell the land for housing, especially in such an inner location.

oh, and forgot to mention i heard the planning minister, mssr barrrrr, on this on the wireless today, suggetsing rezoning will be required and that it will take some time, over a year…

meanwhile, the drought continues – has anyone thought to have the govt chip in (ha ha, a pun) the $$ now for the work against the land sales??

i don’t think they are in it for the buck, aurelius – seems they are set on drought-proofing and establishing dams (woulda thought one was the other. silly me…), so unlikely the members or the exec will see a razoo in any other form.

fore!

It will be interesting to see what the land ends up selling for, and what type of dwellings they build on it.

I wish them all the best of luck, the people at federal are reasonable down to earth types with great facilities, not like some of the pompous types at Royal Canberra GC. I’m quite amazed that Federal’s membership is falling, it’s an outstanding place so good luck to them.

The community would let the weeds grow.

Federal supports extensive nature tracks, gets people to go out and get active in sport, has a rather nice club that hosts weddings etc.

Frankly, I would support them selling the land as long as it is for a retirement village and not another toffee nosed gated community like at Kambah.

If a golf club, or other community organisation is given land for sporting purposes, why should they be allowed to sell it for profit at a subsequent time?
If they cannot run a viable club using the land, they should return it to the community.

Federal have a real water problem – they cannot connect to the grey water system either.

I have played at royal adelaide and they have gone for a central australian desert feel- perhaps federal has to completely redesign around permanently poor water.

They have no lakes nor no natural water storage so they are always going to be in trouble when the dry hits and the true cost of water is factored in.

The area to be sold is good land and wont change the playability of the course, and will fetch very good money. If it is reinvested in drought tolerant greens and fairways, then its a good result all round as far as I am concerned.
