Chief Minister Stanhope has proudly announced that the Commonwealth is going to chip in $20 million over four years for his arboretum.

As an extra bonus Prime Minister Gillard has planted a sapling in the tree park grown from the tree of knowledge, sacred to the memory of all Labor’s true believers.

Readers who have been waiting for an announcement on federal funding for the Centenary of Canberra will no doubt be thrilled to learn that the tree park funding appears to be what we’re getting for that:

The Prime Minister said it is particularly appropriate for the Commonwealth Government to mark the centenary of Canberra, a capital of which all Australians can be proud, with a gift that will benefit both the people of Canberra and the Australian community as a whole.

It will not only become a national education, research and tourist resource but symbolises the journey of renewal for the people of Canberra as the forests replace the landscape scarred by the 2003 bushfires.

Mr Stanhope said today’s planting represented the growing national importance of the Arboretum.

“The ACT Government’s vision for the Arboretum is to create a unique and lasting legacy for Canberra and the Australian community,” Mr Stanhope said. “By its official opening in 2013 to mark the centenary of Canberra, the Arboretum will showcase 100 forests of rare and endangered species from across the globe, as well as a mosaic of permanent gardens.”

The Prime Minister encouraged all Australians to participate in the centenary celebrations in 2013. “The celebrations will give people the opportunity to discover the many things that Canberra has to offer and to appreciate its beauty and distinctive character”.

I’m sick of seeing footage of her walking around under the wind turbines.

One has to wonder how that bunch of saplings could be considered outside of Canberra.

It’s well outside of the Canberra most pollies would see… or be aware of… (airport, parliament house, Manuka/Griffith restaurants, their hotel… yep, that’d be about it)

I am truly astounded the Chief Minister has managed to divert the Federal funding for Canberra’s centenary to his own pet legacy project.

Agreed. The money would have been better spent on more public art to brighten up our city.

I happened to skip past this item on the news this morning while channel surfing. ABC headline at the bottom of the story read ‘Gillard plants tree at arboretum outside Canberra’.

One has to wonder how that bunch of saplings could be considered outside of Canberra.

Get plenty of trees for that.

Until someone gets into the park and steals the newly planted saplings.

Taking the lead of ‘Chop71’, how about “Pee on a tree day” at the arboretum?

The Arboretum = Another memorial to John Stanhope Another place to put more public art. Yee-HAH!

I guess that makes me a redneck.

….can’t wait to pee on that

Shouldn’t it be the ‘tree of incompetence and waste’?

Heh.

I thought it was one measly tree, big whoop, but $20 million is a bit more like it. Get plenty of trees for that.
