Simon Corbell has proudly announced that his reverse Robin Hood Feed-In Tariff scheme (whereby those who can afford to generate their own electricity get paid for generating some of the most expensive juice in the world) has had a very happy launch.

The ACT’s nation leading Feed-In Tariff Scheme has had a strong start and has saved 238 tonnes of greenhouse gases since it started in March this year, Minister for Energy, Simon Corbell, said today.

“Quarterly figures as at June 30, 2009 show since March this year, we have seen a very encouraging level of take-up in the community, with 163 new installations, an increase of 28.7%, and a total of 731 installations are currently feeding back into the grid,” Mr Corbell said.

Simon reckons that by next March 90% of something will be taking advantage.

Kambah is also leading the way, as usual thanks to having four times the population of most suburbs, followed by the deep green of O’Connor.

>>and has saved 238 tonnes of greenhouse gases

It hasn’t saved a single gram. Unless Simon can point to which power stations were shut down, when, and for how long – they were still burning away as per normal.

Sums and solar????? —- Noooo that will never happen!!! 🙂

DHMO your sums do not add up.

30GW of installed capacity running flat chat 24×7 only adds up to 263 TWh generated in a year.

Care to explain the basis of proposed legal action? Can’t see it happening myself.

Solar in Canberra will do 4 hrs a day, wind works about 20% of the time. They do not produce necessarily when it is needed. What is needed is a decent sized battery. In OZ we use 294 Terra Watt Hours annually. To do this we have about 30 Giga Watts of power stations. Do the sums that means each of us has a responsibility for around 29 Kilo Watt Hours per day. That means 128 Kilo Watt hours for a household of 4. Rubbish you say that’s not possible. Well only 10% of power is used in private houses. So lets put a 2 Kilo Watt hour unit on the roof and get the general tax payer fund it. Really smart!

Oh batteries can anyone come up with one of about 1 Terra Watt hour capacity we will need quite a few!

I waiting for an legal action against the solar funding it has large equity issues.

Efficiency????

Bah Humbug – This has nothing to do with efficiency at all – and everything to do with awesome PR.

Believe me, if I could find a way to finance the up front cost (Perhaps through a tax deductible investment load) I will be putting the absolute maximum system in that can suck the government coffers dry!

An alternate measure of efficiency was the speed with which the pink bats ™ disappeared from the local Bunnings as soon as a rebate was available. Now Bunnings cant purchase the bats at all, cause they are going direct to installers, so they can double bill me for installing the stupid things…… Thats efficiency!

I really don’t see how rooftop solar units are more efficient than coal or hydro power plants – someone has to make the things and that takes a lot of resources, so the trade-off is pretty dubious.
