Chief Minister Gallagher is calling for feedback on plans for the proposed dedicated bus priority lane on Canberra Avenue.

“The ACT Government is committed under Transport for Canberra to increase work trips using buses to 16% by 2026. Putting in measures which give buses priority over other traffic will help encourage more people to make the switch to bus travel,” the Chief Minister said.

“The dedicated bus priority lane on Canberra Avenue will ease traffic congestion and improve public transport connections along this important east-west transport corridor, including Queanbeyan to Canberra City, and is a key component of ACTION’s Frequent Network.

“A total of $8.2 million was allocated in the 2010-11 budget for this project including a feasibility study, detailed design and construction,” the Chief Minister said.

The bus priority measures will be delivered in four stages. The first stage of work will include a new 1.3 kilometre dedicated bus lane between the Monaro Highway intersection and Hume Circle. This section is currently serviced by about 30 buses during the morning peak, particularly by the Red Rapid service which travels to and from DFO. It is estimated that a dedicated bus lane, as well as priority at intersections, will reduce travel time by at least 10 percent. Stage 1 will also include the upgrade of the intersection of Canberra Avenue and Geelong Street.

The initial construction of a dedicated bus lane will enable a 2-10 minute frequency in the peak period on the Red Rapid route.

Cyclists will also be accommodated by an on-road cycle lane and bike storage facilities at a new major bus stop near the Canberra Eye Hospital, supporting the ACT Government’s bike and bus initiative,” the Chief Minister said.

Well, when it fails ala Athllon drive, at least we will then have a three lane road.

How about a bike path along the banks of the Molonglo, from near the Airport, round the back of Fyshwick to Oaks Estate?

And does this plan mean the 200 route would be extended to Oaks Estate?

What’s a bike path through private land along Molonglo got to do with a planned bus lane on Canberra Ave? Do you live in Oaks Estate by any chance? If so and you’re fed up with public transport from there to Canberra maybe you should have thought twice about moving there to live.
In answer to your question though, there’s about as much chance as getting a regular service to Hall, Tharwa or Michelago.

Didn’t realise there were that many people going shopping at DFO during rush hour.

DFO owners obviously have a mate in govt that could help them (try to) get the ‘needy’ out to DFO to spend their $…..

😉

Also, when does peak hour finish, 9:00, 9:30? Most stores in DFO don’t open till 10am. I’d say those hundreds of people going shopping wouldn’t get on the buses till well after peak hour has subsided.

Considering they won’t be able to widen the road due to the Monaro Hwy overpass structure and all the significant trees along this road, it basically means that Canberra Ave would become one way in both directions. Now that’s the way to make traffic flow faster, isn’t it now. A lane that has one vehicle traveling along it every 15 minutes sounds efficient. Makes sense to me….NOT.

Just spend the money on having free tickets!!! DUH!

The existing cycle path from Qbyn runs on the Fyshwick side of Canberra Ave to almost Whyalla St. This plan then wants it to cross Canberra Ave on the Symonston side and go to opposite KFC. The cycle path will then have to cross Canberra Ave at Hume Circle and the cross Wentworth Ave to access Kingston Foreshores. We will then have three cyclist / motorist intersections that we do not have currently. This will create more traffic hazards for all who use Canberra Ave.
Why not have the cycle path, two way, on the Fyshwick side all the way to the Kingston Foreshores. We do not want more motorist/cyclist rage, smart transport planning will separate bike lane from motorist/bus/trucks.
Hopefully the bus transit lane when combined with park & ride will entice commuters from the region to use public transport. The Red Rapid is a great service. The congestion will only gets worse with the rapid population growth in Googong & Qbyn.
