Female fashions and 'other' religions

Me and the wife were enjoying an afternoon of bank account draining fun (my account not hers!) at the Tuggeranong Hyperdome last Sunday. My wife finding a nice dress that didn’t leave much to the imagination in the cleavage department, she decided to change into it in the store and wear it in the mall – no worries doesn’t bother me or anyone else in our modern society in the slightest, Freedom of dress.

Well unfortunately I was wrong as when we were leaving, there was an older man with his family coming in the opposite direction to us. The man was clearly Muslim as he was wearing Muslim attire and his wife had a form of burka on. The man looked at my wife’s cleavage and his face twisted into a vicious ball of rage, he looked back up to her eyes and stared at her in a very angry and threatening manner. His eyes tracked hers and my wife was actually very scared and moved out of his way, I only noticed at the last minute and shouted out to him. He ignored me and kept walking but stared at my wife angrily as he walked away.

I have respect for other people’s beliefs and religions but this event really pushed me to the limit. The hate in the man’s eyes was unbelievable – and to express that hate towards a beautiful women??

Is it unfair that someone of a religion that is not native to Australia would impose their religious dress code on us here? Should other religions respect the rights of women and assimilate into our society by our laws and rules? What are people’s thoughts on this issue?

The OP didn’t like the way this man was looking at someone so he verbally assaulted him. Nice.

I’m sure CWA women look disapprovingly at all sorts of people, let’s start shouting at them. Some off them probably deserve a punch, too.

Native: belonging to a particular place by birth.

I was born here. That makes me native to Australia.

Really? So an elephant born at Taronga zoo is a native Australian animal? Well, I’ll be buggered.

When referring to humans as opposed to the rest of the earth’s lifeforms, “native” has a different meaning. Amazing isn’t it?

It makes that particular elephant native to Australia.

His fear/anger is his problem, not your wife’s.

until he whips out his scimitar, yells ‘jihad! die, infidels!’, beheads her and runs laughing to the nearest camera threatening the infidels in power across the globe… then it’d be her problem.

but more seriously, the man wasn’t imposing his dress code on you, just reacting as is his upbringing. of course we would like all people to be tolerant of our society [glib rhetoric], but that also means you being tolerant of his views, no? it is, as pointed out elsewhere, disingenuous of you to conflate his religion and his ‘native-ness’ – religions like christianity and islam are not ‘native’ to australia. maybe you should consult the rainbow serpent for its views?

People have every right to look disapprovingly at others if they don’t like what they see. It’s not like anyone tried to pass a law preventing the woman in question from expressing herself through her choice of clothing.

When I was younger and prettier and still living at home, my dad expressed his opinion about my choice of short shorts and crop top with a highly disapproving look and “you’re not wearing that to church are you?”. (well no, I was about to wear it on a date.) It seems Catholic and Muslim men agree on some things. And they’re entitled to their opinion, just as I am entitled to mine.

Even if your wife wears a bikini to the shopping mall, thats her business. The old man has no right to stare or give a look of disapproval.

however like someone else stated here sometimes when you see extremely overweight women wearing v.tight clothes make ppl look up twice, i try hard not to do that…..thats also rude ….

What is the “native” religion of Australia? What do you mean by saying “non native” i dont understand?

All the ppl in australia apart from the Aboriginals (if u think hard they are also migrants) are migrants. The time period in which they came to australia might be different but just because someone came here 100 years ago they dont become native.

And…which religion would you say IS native to Australia then?
And how about we get a native Australian to comment on the issues on assimilation and the imposition of moral codes on society?

Next time get your wifey encounters this titophobic muzzo, get her to whip her top off quick smart and give him an eyeful, such that he will never recover from such a blasphemous event and be cast off from the eternal queue, never to get the 72 virgins waiting for him in heaven.

Oh, and when she does, pickies or it never happened.

I was also at the Hyperdome on the weekend and you should have seen the ball of rage this old guy got into when some yoofs nearly hit him with their skateboards.
He berated them about their pants which were nearly falling down, the shirts they were wearing (rude slogans) and their baseball caps.

Is this the same thing or is it only bad when it’s based on religion?

BTW the yoofs did look like tools.

A geriatric berating a group of reprobates is considered legitimate entertainment in suburban shopping precincts. And given that the “pants on the ground” wearing yoof almost hit him with their skateboards, I think he had a legitimate gripe. All the young lady in question did was show a bit of boobage, she was hardly putting anyone in harms way (unless you were distracted and walked under a bus).

There is a world of difference between a group of hooligans and a hot chick flashing some flesh!

A female wants to walk around the mall wearing a revealing item of clothing and people are COMPLAINING? What the hell is wrong with people? We need MORE of this not less!

Why bring race/religion into it? I could have been just pure and simple jealousy at the sight of your beautiful wife!

Where was the earthquake? Anyways, its not the religion, its the person I’d say.

Need pics of wife/dress to make proper judgement (lol)

I wouldn’t get worked up over him, hes just being OTT.

Religion breeds intolerance.

Film at 11.

A genuinely liberal country “believes in certain values and actively promotes them”, Mr Cameron said.

“Freedom of speech. Freedom of worship. Democracy. The rule of law. Equal rights, regardless of race, sex or sexuality. “It says to its citizens: This is what defines us as a society. To belong here is to believe these things.”

“Frankly, we need a lot less of the passive tolerance of recent years and much more active, muscular liberalism,” the prime minister said

“Let’s properly judge these organisations: Do they believe in universal human rights – including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism?

“These are the sorts of questions we need to ask. Fail these tests and the presumption should be not to engage with organisations,” he added.

From a recent speech by David Cameron.

You know, conservative Christians (or conservative people in general) probably wouldn’t look kindly on too much cleavage showing either.

But I don’t believe your generalisations/stereotyping are justified. How can you expect them to be tolerant and accommodating when you and far too many other Australians don’t appear to be even slightly interested in returning the favour?

So how might he return the favour? By quickly getting his partner to run into a toilet cubicle, covering herself up, then tracking down the rude people and showing ’em?

No.

Yes, this is unfortunate.

But are you just hate – mongering on the Riot Act? Drawing others to your plight so they can come forward and tell nightmare stories about people of different ethnicity.

Honestly, I see overweight teenagers wearing mini pants and I look twice and not all that approvingly. .. the only difference is that this guy was reportedly Muslim, so let’s go to town.

🙁 That really sucks. I don’t believe there’s any justification for that hatred. Most unfortunate.

But I don’t believe your generalisations/stereotyping are justified. How can you expect them to be tolerant and accommodating when you and far too many other Australians don’t appear to be even slightly interested in returning the favour?

There are some wonderful people of Islamic adherence out there, and they are making very real contributions to our society. I’ve had an example or two as colleagues and count them as among the best people I’ve ever worked with. Have you tried to engage with them rather than just grandstanding?

I’ll just say this, if that were to happen to my partner and I, there’d be a helluva lot more happen than just staring.

Dont like what you see, feel free to look away…

His fear/anger is his problem, not your wife’s.

In australia, the only way to impose a dress code is through legislation, so he did not impose his dress code upon your wife.
