Feral Sporting Parents

Okay Rioters,

It’s that time of year again…..I have been a sporting parent for a few years now. Over the past five or so years, the Kukuette has been playing in a team that has run the spectrum of poor (OMG they scored – oops, no, an own goal doesn’t count) to premiers. Since the team started playing together (when they were 6) they have pretty much remained a team. Newcomers have stayed with the team. The parents have welcomed the newbie parents and arranged BBQs and get togethers. Our parents (loud as they may be) even applaud the other teams goals). In all I think we have been very fortunate to be a supportive group and really try to teach the kids about sportsmanship.

So, this week my child tried out for an ACT sport trial where I happened upon some parents whose children were trying out for the same team. Now I understand about vicarious sporting parents, but U11? Gee, give me a break? If someone says “Hey your kid is good’ is there any need to say “Of course” and then discuss loudly how the team would be better with children from a certain club?

Please, Rioters, help. I have been living in some sort of parental bubble. I really need some advice about parents who feel the need to live their non-existent sporting career through their child – and suck it up – or take a teaspoon of concrete won’t cut it unless you want to discuss my inappropriate reaction as reported by the Canberra Times.

So if I understand correctly, this post is based on one short conversation with someone who was just very vain about their own child? If not, please elaborate

Hopefully karma will kick in and little Kynan or little Jesickar will grow up to be a junkie, prostitute, paedophile, used car salesperson, real estate agent or a mass murderer, and cause untold embarrassment to their parents in their later years.

That’ll wipe that smug smile off their faces!

Do you happen to be by any chance the Devil, Mr. Evil?

“Suck it up”

Two quotes from your OP. My advice is to re-read quote 1 and then apply your very own quote 2 to it.

Was your inappropriate action to nude up or cry?

On the oval down from us, we have a variety of sports being played. Women’s rugby (scary, real scary!) is OK. The parents of the Union kids are pretty good, including occasionally applauding good play from the opposing team.

It’s when the soccer comes on that everyone has to worry. What is it about soccer that makes parents go absolutely feral? Swaering at the refs, swearing at the other team and their supporters, and abusing their own side.

Pretty pathetic, but happens all the time. And most of the culprits are bloody foreigners – must have learned it from the war-torn homelands, I guess. And before people get up in arms, a few are Scots/Poms, and possibly the odd Irish (yes, that’s a tautology).

“my inappropriate reaction as reported by the Canberra Times”

What? You can’t go around saying things like that! My urge to find out what your “inappropriate reaction” was was ALMOST enough for me to go out and by a copy of the Crimes.

Thankfully the urge past…
