I am looking to join Fernwood gym and was wondering what others experiences where?

I am currently a member of club slime and I am so sick of the all roid munchers taking up all the weights, plus their crazed blood shot eyes scare me.

Fernwood was started up as a tax dodge by Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny in the 1980s. It was mainly concerned with harvesting the lucrative working women demo, and their advertising (“No Toms, No Harrys and definitely no dicks”) was sexist and insulting.

If you want to go to a gym to gossip and swap recipes Fernwood might suit you. If you are into health, fitness and building muscle there are plenty of serious alternatives. Southern Cross and Anytime Fitness come to mind.

Stay away from Fernwood and Club Lime. As a former employee and instructor at Fernwood and Lime, both are useless globo-gyms only interested in the $$. The care factor of management for members and staff is a minus 5. You are better off at Evo Health Club. Less people, no roids, no diva’s parading in the Lorna Jane Fernwood attire, and Evo gives you a PT session once a week as part of your membership. No I dont work for Evo Health Club however I am a member there now and VERY happy. Its at the premium upper price range and this keeps the steroid heads and diva’s out. Great gym and great facilities.

Help – I have an urgent request- i need your help or any information that you can tell me about your issues with Fernwood. I was a member at Tuggeranong in 2009 and had an accident, while participating in a body-step class- if anyone has witnessed overcrowding or unsafe practises, please contact me urgently!!!!!!!

Some people actually do want to build muscle – whether out of a desire for functional strength, for health reasons, out of sheer vanity, for self esteem, or solely to make themselves more attractive to the opposite/same sex.

If I recall my army days correctly, the beefcakes were the first to flake out of courses. In tears, usually.

I surely hope you were polite enough to share your tissues with the other guys

Tissues? You must be joking. We were issued with about 10 sheets of alleged toilet paper per day. Sharing wasn’t an option.

not a square to spare

Hmm walking around the lake when she is saying she can’t use the weights at the gym, so which lake has suddenly grown barbells, dumbbells, smith machines, bench presses, cable crossovers etc.?

I’m certain there’s plenty of dead swans, abandoned shopping trolleys and coitus engaged teenagers you could utilise as makeshift weights.

You’ve never TRULY had a workout until you’ve attempted to bench press two intimately engaged teenagers in a shopping trolley. The swan makes a great towel – super fluffy.

I would recommend Flames fitness. I’ve been going to the one in Lyneham for years and I like it because it has a mixed clientele in terms of age, body shape, fitness level and gender and the vibe is friendly but non-intrusive. Because you have to book and spaces are limited it’s never too crowded (it isn’t cheap but is value for money in my opinion).

Is Estuardo still plying his trade there?

I will call it “Firmwood”

If people wonder why women choose to go to women-only gyms, and why such gyms exist at all — attitudes like the one above are a case in point

In these days of prolific, easily accessible pornography and brothels there’s just no reason for men who aren’t getting any to perve and salivate over women who want to be left alone working out – go and get your kicks somewhere else, preferably out of the public eye and next to a box of tissues or with a lady of the night

Heard of a joke? i thought it was incredibly lol.

And you gotta be a huge baby to complain about women only gyms.

…but its all fine and dandy for women to get all up in arms about men only clubs? Double standard.

We all know how creepy and gross most men are. Women should not have to put up with that sort of stuff when just trying to work out.

The vast majority of men are there to work out, in all the gyms I’ve been to the guys are just working out with women doing the leering at the muscle bound freaks, having a nice chat and giggle while getting in the way of people or generally being a disruption. Accusing all or even a portion of males who use gyms as sex fiends eye raping you while you work out just waiting for the chance to molest you just goes to show you’ve got an over inflated self image.

honestly, why would you even care if there are women only gyms? Does it impact on your own life in any way?

Its the hypocrisy of the anti-discrimination crowd. The same could be said of the men’s clubs. Was there any impact on the lives of women for not being allowed into men only social clubs where the female equivalent already existed?

There’s no such thing as ‘reverse’ discrimination, its just plain discrimination.

but why do you even care? Only reason i can think of is you are a huge baby. let them have their gyms in peace. it has zero effect on you. it also will keep those pesky women that get in the way and eye rape you to a minimum.

I’m a member of Fernwood, and I love it! I go to the Woden one, it’s never packed, the staff are friendly and the ladies that go are amazing, I’ve made some great friends there.

Really the massive scary roid munchers go to the 24×7 weights only gyms anyway, I barely come across any at club lime.

If you can get into the ANU (you need to be a graduate of ANY university) then its the cheapest and one of the best; but a bit crowded at 5pm. It does have a bit of a male bias in clientele, but most of them are first year uni students looking to beef up to reach 60kg

It may have changed, but I remember ANU as being massively oversubscribed – it got to the point I’d sometimes actually turn around and leave (to come back later) upon getting there because it was that packed.

So true, I can’t believe how many years I spent screwing around on the treadmill and stupid pump classes, if you want results and fun cross fit is the way. Although don’t do what I did and just rock up to a class without going to a few introduction classes, it can be a bit expensive at the start but once you learn you basics your good to go. Not a roid muncher in site. The only thing I don’t like about it is basically everyone does the paleo diet, I am not such a fan.

Thanks for the feedback, went and checked it out yesterday, Bored PS you were spot on, there was certainly was an abundance of medicine balls.

I won’t be joining, the weights area is crap, and I am not into fussy crap like moist aloe vera scented towels and free breakfast, I just want to go in and do my workout in peace , maybe I should get a home gym…

I was a member of Club Pink and found it to be bitchy and judgemental. Which is stupid as going to a gym shows that you intend to better yourself. I joined Fernwood instead and my experience with it has been great. The instructors are friendly and the general feeling of the patrons is one of indifference. No one cares what others are doing. Weights aren’t used that often at my club. Not sure how it is at other clubs.

There are men only clubs? Where?

Australia has several gentlemen’s clubs. Sydney has the Union, University & Schools Club and the Royal Automobile Club of Australia. Melbourne has the Melbourne Club, the Savage Club and the Athenaeum Club (named after its counterpart in London). The Australian Club exists a separate club in each of Sydney and Melbourne. Adelaide has the Adelaide Club and the Naval, Military and Air Force Club of South Australia. Brisbane has Tattersalls Club and the Brisbane Polo Club (housed in the heritage listed Naldham House in the centre of the central business district). Perth has the Weld Club and the WA Club. Canberra has the Commonwealth Club; Hobart, The Tasmania Club; Newcastle, the Newcastle Club. The Commonwealth Club, Canberra Club, Newcastle Club, Brisbane Polo Club, the Kelvin Club in Melbourne, and both Royal Automobile Clubs mentioned above allow women to enjoy full membership.

and as of November 2009, all gentlemans clubs have the right to operate as male only clubs, and so they should have that right. everyone should be able to spend their personal time surrounded in the people or things they want to be. Actually according to personal training advice, its better to use weights for weight loss, as doing weight training means your still burning fat at rest, rather than cardio where you burn, but not constantly. weights are not just for weight lifting or muscle building.

Club Lime also have a club pink in the main Belconnen gym at CISAC. My daughter says it is pretty nice with free breakfasts. There are a number of other gyms in the Club Lime group. I find that Kaleen and the Oatley Court gym have more ‘normal’ people working out than CISAC.

I’ve been going to the Kaleen gym (through various owners and names, currently club lime) for about 6 years now. I’m a guy, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but there’s lots of women who go there and do weights, machines and classes, and they all seem cool with it. It seems like mostly ordinary local people (like me) with a wide variety of age groups from young guys/girls to white haired old dudes like the bloke next to me on the treadmill this evening.

There’s lots of muscle bound young fellas, but they’re all well behaved as far as I can tell from my male perspective and none of them have crazy eyes that I can discern. There was a strange roided up young idiot who disturbed some of the women about three years ago. He was only there for a couple of weeks, then he foolishly caused an altercation with the male personal trainers one night when they called him on it, and he was never seen again. And by “never seen again” I mean he was excluded from the gym, rather than “his body was never found”. 🙂

I’ve been to the Club Lime at CISAC and didn’t like it. Perhaps you could come by the Kaleen gym, and see how it feels.

Disclaimer: I have no relationship with Kaleen Club Lime apart from being a long time happy customer of the Kaleen operation.

Why is it that when men work out they wear a baggy Tshirt and baggy shorts
Ladies on the other hand will wear the tightest thing they can pull off.
Also when you talk about going to the gym to be serious… why does club pink have to offer a ‘free’ breakfast, which gender isnt serious when going to the gym now?

As a male I don’t appreciate the insinuation that I’m eye raping females in the gym.

Yes, there are mens clubs but the moment a woman attempts to join and is predictably knocked back, out come the women’s lib movement, court cases etc to force them to open up to all.

There’s nothing ‘reverse’ about it, its discrimination full stop. Legal or not.

I find it pretty funny that some guys get butthurt over the fact that there are all female gyms. Like it’s some sort of sexist, discrimination matter.

Given the way some of the male patrons ogle over & harrass some of the female members at my gym, I’m not surprised that some woman feel intimidated or uncomfortable working out at regular gyms.

If there was a market of men who felt intimidated or uncomfortable training around women, I’m sure someone would go into buisness & cater for them.

I mean – can’t you just go for a walk around the lake? Why would you want to cloister yourself in a noisome sweatpit, breathing in other people’s foetid exhalations when you could be out in the fresh air with the sun on your face?

Hmm walking around the lake when she is saying she can’t use the weights at the gym, so which lake has suddenly grown barbells, dumbbells, smith machines, bench presses, cable crossovers etc.?

I love going to the gym, I like to lift weights, I like to challenge my body that way, it pisses me off to know end when people who don’t have the first clue say stupid shit like, oh walk around the weight, that is great, it does absolutely nothing for you, but hey I know better because I said to do it.

My experience with the Fernwood Belconnen and Civic gyms have been fine. Most women there seem to be friendly, of course you get the odd person who acts likes she’s the queen bee, but I’m not there to be social or make friends. Both places were clean, and the staff were always quite pleasant to me. But yes, probably best to do a trial there first before you commit.

Fernwood is as good as any gym. If you go – you will see good benefits – if you don’t – it’s expensive and a waste… pretty simple.

Nope, I’m sure they have a pair of scissors somewhere on site….

You know you walked into that one don’t you.

I’d recommend Club Pink over Fernwood. The Club Pink staff are lovely but I found the Fernwood ones so rude and pushy!

I go to the gym at the tuggeranong pool. Cheaper than club lime, facilities ok. Not a lot of the stereotypical weight lifting guys there, alot of 20’s thinking they are bigger than they are, but they mostly stick to themselves and a few chat to everyone.

My suggestion is ask for a 1 week trial of a gym to try it out before signing up.

Women can be their own worst enemies at time, so an all female gym is possible not the solution you want.

hahaha, this is the funniest thread for a while…even the question is funny and pretty much all the responses

I personally love Fernwood. I have several friends who go there and love it as well. They have a free joining day next Wednesday if you are interested. The clubs are friendly, clean and supportive.

I am interested, but I also possess testes. Will this prove an obstacle to gaining membership?

Club Lime have a small gym in the city now at 121 Marcus Clark St and depending when you go there you will pretty much have the place to yourself. I walk past there quite often and usually only see 2 or 3 people there most times.

I was a member and hated every minute, the only good thing was none of them ever used the weights so I always had it to myself, good luck getting a medicine ball, most of them sit around bouncing on them while holding 10 gram dumbells as a workout, i believe they even have a whole hour ” toning” class dedicated to doing just that .

Seriously stay at club lime, harden up, put your head phones in, crank up your ipod and ignore the roid monkeys – most of them are gay anyway so you really have nothing to worry about. If you go to club lime Tuggers, consider going to another one, the further south the lower the IQ and the worse it gets.

Although I should mention one good thing about fernwood is all the fat overweight women wearing skinns make you feel better about yourself, it’s a great confidence booster.

I used to work in an office across the road from a womens-only gym. A certain manager setup a camera in the window on the gym, so he could watch the ladies working out from the privacy of his office.

On a more serious note, how do these clubs get away with discriminating so blatantly? Why cant we have Whitewood, a gym exclusively for caucasians, so we <southern accent>”dont have to look at any of dem colored folk”</southern accent>?

Creepy.

Also, in regards to your quetsion, I found this to be a pretty good explanation:

Minority groups once emphasised the similarity of all human beings and hence promoted the equal application of human rights. Currently, the same groups are embracing and promoting their difference and separation from society. These groups fought for acceptance and equality and now, even after the legislation had been introduced to enforce the equal application of rights, certain members are isolating themselves and even reverse discriminating in the action of ‘preventing discrimination’ against their own group. The precedent that has been allowed by section 89 of the Equal Opportunity Act, as well as decisions made by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), has challenged the entire notion of equal rights. The initial aims of the Women’s Liberation Movement as well as the LGBT stand out against the current aims of applying for exemption of the Equal Opportunity Act, the legislation founded to enforce equal human rights as well as restricting discrimination against particular groups of people. The policy that was implemented to develop equal opportunities and to impede discrimination is the same legislation that is allowing for groups to reverse discriminate, ‘legally’.

I want to make a male-only gym across the way from Fernwood so all the dudes can look at all the working out chicks while they work out.

They get away with it like those clubs for men only get away with it -majority of women don’t care that men have clubs for themselves, men shouldn’t care if women have a gym for themselves. easy

Your solution may not have to be a woman only gym. And your perception of body-builders may in fact be skewed. Even blokes that don’t inject can be pretty massive and have testosterone levels off the richter – hence the scary eyes. Single blokes are probably even scarier with all that pent up frustration.

I will call it “Firmwood”

Awesome !!

I’m a member of club lime also, and I’ve also been a member of Fernwood, personally i felt more self conscious in Fernwood then i ever have in Lime. Yeh the roiders do get into the weights area, true – but if you go near them and are friendly they will be nice to you in return (usully works with most humans i find, drugged or otherwise) Depending on which club your actually going to, i have full membership so i travel around and find quiet ones when i need the weights. Otherwise club lime is the greatest place ever. Id rather work out near men who really are there for the same reason i am, then go to the perfume infused gossip/ bitch fest that was Fernwood. (Though i will add this in defense of Fernwood, i should say that when i really needed some weightloss help, they gave me 7 free personal training sessions, just to help. that was great of them and i will be eternally greatfull as i was a very very big woman, a womans size 32 and with the help and knowlege i gained from them- i am now a size 12.)
