Filthy smokers sparking up the city

TAMS and the ESA are pleading with Canberra’s smokers to stop starting fires:

With the warm weather upon us, the ACT Government has today reminded motorists not to drop cigarette butts out the window of their vehicle. In the ACT this year there has been at least 12 fires that have started due to cigarette butts being carelessly discarded.

“Staff are on patrol across the ACT’s main arterial roads and highways and will be on the lookout for people tossing cigarette butts out the window of their vehicle,” Senior Ranger, City Rangers, Glenn Tomlinson, said.

“This is an incredibly thoughtless and irresponsible act. Not only does it reduce our city’s amenity and have environmental impacts on waterways, habitats and soils, it also has the potential to cause bushfires which can threaten life and property.

“Anyone caught incorrectly disposing of cigarette butts will be issued with an on-the-spot fine of $200 for people who drop lit butts, or $60 for people who drop unlit or extinguished butts.

“So please don’t be a tosser and appropriately dispose of your cigarette butts.”

I think a new system should be introduced where cigarettes and smoking is totally banned. Smokers who can’t or won’t quit should be executed.

If they were serious about this, they could start by banning smoking in cars. Or, if they see someone smoking in the car, pull ’em over and check the ashtray… chances are it’ll be pristine.

I always wonder how littering of cigarette butts ever became ‘acceptable’ in the first place? Is it because it is a burning piece of rubbish and therefore needs to be put out that it is tossed on the floor, stamped on, but then left there until it is cleaned up by someone paid to do so or finally leaches it’s chemicals into the ground and disappears.

Outside my office block there’s a concrete receptacle for butts and it usually has one or two still alight. So many do not attempt to extinguish them before throwing. Smokers should also be standing at least 5 metres away from the building when smoking, but consistently seem to have no concept of what that distance might look like.

They smoke these expensive stinky things but baulk at having the butts in their cars, the only positive is they usually die in agony, and of course it keeps the population down

I would hope it’s a criminal offence with jail time for incorrectly disposing of a lit cigarette butt during a total fire ban. If not, it farking well should be.

The only way to appeal to butt-chuckers is with a sledgehammer.

Yup, either that or we should be putting them into chaff bags, and throwing them out to sea. Throwing out a hot cigarette butt where there may be dry grass is just so reckless. One stupid act puts so much life / property at risk!

Lit cigarettes should be inserted into the butts of littering smokers. Apart from the really kinky smokers, this should reduce the problem and leaves no external evidence (bayonets heated in a fire is another method used in some African wars and select private schools).

However I have seen communities that really take this seriously handing out little plastic cigarette bins that people can carry with them. There’s room for a couple of butts so if you have a cigarette on a beach, in a park or in a car, you can put it out and store it for later disposal without having to carry around a horrible stinking butt, which obviously nobody wants in their hand, on their person or in the street because it’s disgusting.

The snow resorts have been doing this for the last few years. The containers are old film canisters (or similar).

This is kind of interesting http://globalnews.ca/news/961723/first-cigarette-butt-recycling-program-in-the-world-launches-today-in-vancouver/

Smokers who do this are unbelievable. I’ve followed 2 cars this week alone who I’ve witnessed throw their butts out the window. I’ve got them on carcam but I seriously doubt any authorities would care to act. Not to mention the fact that they cover everyone else’s cars in ash and a foul smell.

To anyone who smokes in their car, and thinks about flicking their butt – pull your head out of your arses and show some consideration.

I know my brother and niece both pinch out the ember and crush it with their foot ensuring there is no chance of it catching fire. The remaining butt is then put in the garbage bin.
I see an outdoor area near my work place and although there are butt bins………..there are also hundreds of cigarette butts in the gardens. Sheer laziness.

If they are stupid enough to smoke in he first place they are unlikely to take any notice of anything TAMS and the ESA have to say.

Cigarette butts are tiny. If you can’t find a way to put them out and carry them to a bin then your little delicate arms probably shouldn’t go through the strain of opening a packet and operating a lighter.

Here’s the thing I don’t get, it’s not as though they only start stinking once you stop smoking them, they stink while you smoke them, smokers are fecking retards just cull them.

Has anyone ever got a ticket (or know someone who has) for dropping a cigarette butt? .

Yep. I was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by an unmarked police car not long after the Canberra fires. Boy did the driver get a good lecture and a fine (not sure how much) and had her car going over with a fine tooth comb for any defects. She’s given up smoking since then.

wow….good to see it actually happens 🙂 thanks for the story

Has anyone ever got a ticket (or know someone who has) for dropping a cigarette butt? Filthy smokers…can’t stand the dodging of butts everywhere and they are invariably the “spit in the streets” types as well.

Public flogging anyone???….

I have at times wanted to dob people in for doing this, but didn’t know who to call and if they would act on my complaint.

The distinction between lit and unlit seems a bit odd though. If they pick it up and it isn’t lit, it could’ve been when they tossed it out of the window. If it is lit, the offender could argue that it appeared dead when they threw it out. Just fine them all the same and I’d be happy for it to be way more than $200.
