2013 has whizzed by and there have been many worthy newcomers to the Canberra food scene. Here are my last reviews for 2013.
Brunch
I was excited to try out The Cupping Room, a new venture by Ona Coffee. The place was packed but it didn’t take long to get in. I had trouble deciding what to order, and settled on the Blintz. Best decision ever! These are basically like crepes and stuffed with pitted cherries and sweet potato. I would definitely order that again.
I had the bean and chorizo cassoulet at Ellacure and found it was pleasant but didn’t have that wow factor.
I headed to the new French crepery that opened up at the Ainslie shops – Breizh Café. It didn’t fill me up as crepes naturally aren’t that big, but these were soft, fresh and delicious. I’d like to go back to try out their lunch crepes – perhaps with snails?
I tried out Braddon’s Mood Food, for both brunch and dinner. The braised kilo ham hocks were juicy and fell off the bone. I’m impressed with their unique dessert menu offering ‘dessert nachos’ and ‘dessert gnocchi’ and frequently changing up the ingredients. Breakfast is a tad pricy but I enjoyed it.
Lunch
Drove out to Lark Hill in Bungendore and had the most exquisite 50 degree ‘bag’ salmon. It was unbelievably soft, tender and oh-so-moist. The best piece of cooked salmon I’ve ever had.
The latest bar/pub to open up in Kingston is Little Brooklyn, offering a beer garden (more of a back deck) and pricey food menu. Not a bad place to hang out, but it’s not my cup of tea.
I came across Frank & Beanz out at the Majura Park shopping centre. Selling hot dogs, burritos and other Mexican style foods. I was happy with my tasty beef burrito.
Dinner
The highly popular Malaysian restaurant, Papparich, is pretty awesome. I’ve been back a few times (here’s a second post) and just keep wanting to go back for more. Prices are cheap compared to other places and there is an extensive tea/soya milk drinks menu.
The dinner menu at Penny University is quite limited (only 6 mains to choose from). My lamb back strap was okay but expensive for what I got. I did covet my friend’s 6hr braised beef cheeks which I will have to get next time.
Tuesday’s is half price mussel night at the Belgian beer café in Kingston. I’ve been happy with both the Thai curry and Indian Goan curry mussels – so full of flavour!
I tried out the new sushi train to open in the Canberra Centre by Hero Sushi. A decent sushi train, the best Canberra has to offer at the moment, but not overly fantastic.
I got a taste of Peru at Cholo’s Peruvian restaurant in Dickson. Incan Kola, Incan potato and pork stew, fresh ceviche and Peruvian desserts. Happy to go back for more!
The yellow double decker bus in Braddon is back in action. I tried out the newly reopened Mandalay Bus for some hot take away food.
