Finalising consideration of changing the feed-in tariff

Simon Corbell is letting us know that he’s still thinking about expanding the feed-in tariff to include medium and large scale generation capacity.

Sadly it’s only for solar and he seems wedded to that.

Why not let people earn a buck from time on an exercise bike?

The willingness of the current Federal government to leap with glad cries on the few dollars that my solar panels return quarterly [and without a thought to the cost of installing them in the first instance], calls into question their green credentials!!

I have an exercise bike that’s perfect for retrofitting with a coil and re-purposing as a power supply. What do you think I should power off it?

That’s right. If you don’t pay any tax, why would you get a refund?

In reality, though, it’s probably a reasonable thing to exempt the feed in tarriff from taxation, provided it’s offset against a similar energy cost.

In terms of investment, I don’t think putting solar panels on your roof makes financial sense. But that’s not why we do it.

I wonder if this is a core promise from Julia, and, if so, whether it will affect ACT GovCo’s position/incentives?

It may be income – but it cost me sixteen and a half thousand dollars [after the rebate] to install!! I was rather bargaining on getting some/most of that back before I shuffle off.

If it is counted as income then wouldn’t you be able to claim the initial outlay maintenance depreciation etc on your tax?

Yep.

As a pensioner I don’t pay tax. And I would have to make it to something like 93 to break even:<)

Perhaps it was a Because someone riding along, working fairly hard would put out 200 watts. Assuming their pedalling can be converted into electricity with 60% efficiency, the getting paid at 45.7c per kilowatt hour that means they would have to pedal for 18 hours to earn one dollar.

It really should be being treated as income, because that’s what it is.

But is he going to do anything about the problem that pensioners have with the feed-in tariff being paid separately and therefore being counted as income by the likes of ATO and Centrelink, instead of as an offset to their power bill like in NSW.
