Finally we get cardboard coffins

One would think that if you were being cremated, what with being dead and all, you’d want nothing more but the cheapest possible enclosure that preserved decency.

And everywhere else in Australia cardboard coffins have been legal, except the mad little ACT.

Sure the undertakers would prefer you order a silk lined mahogany box. Especially as they can get the silver handles off before you burn and sell them to the next grieving family coming through the door. But why on earth were we legally forbidden from taking the cheap option and leaving more money for our estate?

In any event the ABC reports that the legal impediment to cardboard coffins has been removed and now the Norwood Crematorium is the only thing holding up the practice.

According to the OneEarth site (sells cardboard coffins from Adelaide), about 80% of coffins ARE already chipboard. But there may then be emissions from the glues used, and there are doubts about the effect on native forests when sourcing the chips.
Anyone know why Norwood is opposed to cardboard for cremations?

Yeah great idea.

But didn’t the Defence Department try that. You know, using Fed Ex or someone to ship Pvt Kovko home from Iraq.

Chances are if you used a removalist, he would get confused and take poor granny to the Wood fired Pizza Place. Saves time though, cook the deceased and the brunch for the wake in just minutes!

Sensible idea!

Wonder if you could hire a removalist company to transport the corpse from the morgue to the crematorium and get a free card box as well!

My mother has always been very annoyed about wasting good wood on a coffin. She wants a chipboard or cardboard one.

I’m sure the residents of Hackett and Ainslie would be suitably annoyed, too.

Ah, but that would arouse the ire of the Anti Pollution Groups, the Global Warming groups, the Don’t Use Our Lake At All Groups and the I Just Want To Be Angry About Something Groups.

We need to legalise Viking funerals on the lakes.

Flaming corpses on LBG would surely be a tourist drawcard.
