Finding old bottles in the ACT

I have recently taken up an interest in old poison bottles and whilst perusing eBay for some, I stumbled across a closed auction for 140 old bottles, much to my frustration the auction had only ended a few weeks ago and the entire lot had gone for 99 cents.

What’s more frustrating is that the auction also included the secret location where more bottles could supposedly be found, apparently it’s somewhere 45 minutes east of Canberra.

On my quest to find old bottles I have decided to look past eBay and into my own backyard, but no obvious areas in or near the ACT spring to mind for the prospective bottle-digger.

If anyone knows anywhere in the local region that has remnants of occupancy where I might start my treasure hunt I would be very interested to hear.

It seams that those lucky south and western Australians live in the best bottle-digging country as this picture from WA illustrates.

Old “POISON” bottles…….

bloody hell. I wouldn’t go near them for the risk of self injury. Then I must wonder…..

do you hold any type of clearance ??????????

“Poison” was put on many colonial (19th century) medicine bottles just as a matter of course and were often blue glass rather than green/black glass used for beer/wine/case-gin bottles

My brother-in-law unearth a bottle in England which contained port, couldn’t believe he drank it, the bottle alone would have been worth a substanial amount of money, early century.

Whenever any of the dams and lakes are at a particularly low level, it would be well worth walking the foreshores. Last year when fishing at Old Adaminaby when the water was well down, I came across all manner of bottles including a cracking old bottle of Islay malt (can’t remember the actual distillery) that looked to my untrained eye to be of a reasonable age and would have been a worthy addition to the decor of my shed if I hadn’t forgotten to bring it home. Bugger.

Try between Braidwood and Moruya, throughout the hills. Miners huts and camps dating back to the 1850s …

Try the surrounding area of Lake Bathurst, there are a number of old campsites and settlements that have been long forgotten and abandoned (If you can find them). Or alternatively, go for a walk on abandoned train tracks and see what is on either side.

If you really are serious about looking for old bottles etc. in Canberra and the surrounding region it would certainly be worth informing yourself of the provisions of the ACT and NSW Heritage legislation.

The kinds of places where old bottles can be found – abandonned rubbish dumps, old building sites etc. are likely to be afforded some degree of legal protection under heritage legislation which is often ‘tenure blind’ meaning that having obtained the permission of the land holder is no defence.

The NSW Heritage Office regularly investigate e-Bay sales of illegally recovered items – including old bottles – and a number of sucessful prosecutions have been made.

Would you be interested in a collection of old coke and soda bottles?

My wife and I cleaned up a similar looking mess at Casuarina Sands last Monday… Maybe you could try there. Geeze I wish people weren’t so uncaring about the nice places around here.
