ACT Fire & Rescue are currently on scene at the residential Metropolitan Apartments, Gordon Street, Canberra City.

ACT Fire-fighters are currently investigating a fire reported to have started on the sixth floor.

The building has been evacuated.

Update to follow.

7:10pm Sunday 29 April 2012

An internal investigation of the residential apartment building has returned no sight of fire or smoke.

ACT Fire & Rescue are currently using the Bronto Aerial Platform to access floors five and six of the building to continue investigations.

7:30pm Sunday 29 April 2012

ACT Fire-fighters have now allocated the source of the reported fire.

A reflection of candles flames alerted a neighboring resident to call Emergency Triple Zero (000) suspecting a fire in the apartment.

Residents have now been advised that the apartment building is safe and can return to their homes.

oh dear, does this mean we can expect a fleet of teepee bearing rafts appearing on Lake Ginninderra ? Thats really going to put a crimp in the water skiing regatta.

If they built lean-tos instead then they could be used as ramps?

False alarm also at the new Lena Karmel lodge on Marcus Clarke yesterday around 1:30pm. A lot of stunned and bewildered ANU students wandering around in pyjamas!

But there’s a fire-alarm every day at unilodge.

Maybe I’m just getting old, but where is the bedwetter in this story?

Ahhh, I was unsure if that was the connection, given it was 7:40pm.

Pretty sure the bill would be more than $2K for that event.
Two fire trucks (plus a support vehicle), a couple of police vans and two ambulances for an hour or two.

I wouldn’t want to be relying on that “Bronto” thing to save my life, it’s rediculously slow, from setup to movement. The cherry picker we had in the RFS took about 3 minutes to set up/level and if you were in the bucket and weren’t holding on when it got to the top you would be launched out of it. Think I will stay in the building next time rather than wait for that action to start/conclude. Abseiling gear to my rescue if need be.

So, who gets charged the $2,000 callout fee that the fireys always threaten to issue in these situations? Does the person who had the candles receive the fine, or does the twitchy neighbour who called emergency services out receive it?

Heh.. A candle..
Theres quite a few good flame screensavers that would do a better job!
