Fire on Thursday destroyed a house in Kambah, with the damage bill initially estimated at $350,000.

ACT Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze at the Carleton Street property with three fire pumpers and various support functions when the alarm was raised at 11.13am.

Fire crews arrived a short time later to find the home engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire from outside the structure as part of the roof had collapsed. They focused their efforts on the kitchen and family room area directly under the section of collapsed roof.

Localised smoke spread in the immediate area and residents and teachers and pupils from a nearby school were advised to remain indoors.

The cause of the fire is being investigated
