Canberra’s professional and volunteer Firies will be marching through the Manuka shopping precinct to celebrate their 100th year of service to the community. Simon Corbell will march with them.

The torchlight parade will travel through the Manuka shopping precinct and will involve ACT Fire & Rescue fire fighters, Community Fire Unit volunteers as well as colleagues from other emergency services agencies.

“As our city commemorates its centenary, ACT Fire & Rescue is also celebrating its 100th birthday,” Mr Corbell said.

“The first Fire Brigade Chief Officer was appointed in 1913 and commenced recruitment to form a fire service during that year,” he said.

“Since then, we have seen our city grow and witnessed the important service ACT Fire & Rescue provides to our community.”

Tomorrow night’s torchlight parade will be approximately 1.5 kilometres long. Personnel, along with vehicles past and present, will assemble near the Griffith Oval at 5.45pm. The group will then travel along Captain Cook Crescent, Franklin and Furneaux Streets, Manuka Circle and onto Canberra Avenue. The march will finish at the Canberra Fire Museum, the first permanent fire station in Canberra, on the corner of Empire Circuit and Fitzroy Street, Forrest.

What: ACT Fire & Rescue Torchlight Parade

Date: Tomorrow night (Friday 14 June, 2013)

Time: 5:45pm – 6:45pm

Where: Assemble near Griffith Oval at 5.45pm. The parade will travel through the Manuka shopping precinct and arrive at the Canberra Fire Museum (former Forrest Fire Station) at around 6.30pm.

I’m all for celebrating their service, but if it were my birthday I’d be pretty miffed that my party involved me marching. I’d want to sit down, maybe watch some other people march.

I hope they get to have a party after.

I hate to hose cold water on your parade, Barcham, but it seems from the media release that Rural Fire Brigades are not specifically invited, only the much smaller and newer Community Fire Units. Charming.
