The ACT Fire Brigade has evacuated the first floor of the Canberra Centre tonight following a fire in the food court.

Firefighters responded to the sandwich shop after receiving reports of a deep fryer alight.

An employee was able to quickly extinguish the fire by placing a fire blanket over the appliance.

The area is now being ventilated before allowing customers back inside.

The ground floor of the centre is unaffected and trading as normal.

Yep – 4 appliances with most of the firies sitting outside near the vehicles for well over 1 hour and then a gathering (sort of like a prayer meeting from where I was sitting) and then 3 still hanging around for a while. All over a fire that was over with fairly quickly!

It was a big deal – the police blocked off the entrance near Kingsleys and the escalator near Koko’s, upstairs though I could have walked right into the area as I couldn’t see any blocked off areas up to the Dendy escalators but all the shops were shut up at that end.
