Fire in the Owen Flats

ACT Fire & Rescue are currently on scene following a unit fire on at ‘Owen Flats’ on Northbourne Avenue, Lyneham.

Crews have extinguished a fire which is believed to have started near a bed mattress.

The fire was contained to the room of origin, minimal smoke damage has been received to the remainder of the unit and one neighboring unit.

One person is believed to have been home during the start of the blaze and safely self evacuated. There are no injuries reported.

Neighboring units on the ground floor of the three story complex were evacuated but residents have now returned to the building.

Four fire pumpers, a command vehicle, Hazardous Materials Unit and Breathing Apparatus Support are currently on scene.

Crews are currently conducting ventilation and atmospheric monitoring to the smoke damaged area. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Estimated damage bill is $40,000.

I was wondering what all those sirens were for. Probably one of the inhabitants smoking bongs in bed.

I thought for a second this could have been the reason I saw three cop cars hauling ass out of Morphett Street around 8:20 this morning, but then I saw the time-stamp at the bottom.

Glad to hear no-one was hurt, but I’m still curious to know what piqued the cops interest this morning.
