Don has sent in these striking pictures last night with this note:

Was out taking sunrise shots this morning…and saw this unusual light in a distant cloud. It was brilliantly white with a red tinge.

Wonder if anyone can shed any ‘light’ on what might have caused this phenomenon.

Shots were taken from the south bank of LBG west of the Canberra Yacht Club at about 7:12 am, Thursday 24/05/2012

Coincidentally I saw a similar shot a couple of weeks back (in that case from Canada).

Mr Scott, warp factor 5…

Atmosphere with the right amount of dew in it acting as a magnifying glass, focusing the ray on the sun on a single point which is the cloud that appears on fire.

And now for something requiring deeper contemplation…
Is it beer o’clock yet??

(after a few pints we won’t be giving a figg what that is other than it looks beautiful)

Probably some water crystals in the cloud, causing more reflection.

It’s just the sun hitting that cloud at just the right angle to highlight it. Probably also through a gap in other clouds

+1. Nothing very tricky about it but it does look impressive.

I’d be very interested to know what causes this phenomenon too. A few months back I spotted the same thing on a larger scale and couldn’t comprehend the cause.

End of days! End of days!

Whatever it is, it’s pretty.

I only believe in gay marriage if both chicks are hot. Oops, sorry, wrong one…

Reptoids.
