ACT Emergency Services Agency Acting Commissioner Tony Graham has declared a Total Fire Ban for the whole of the ACT under Section 114 of the Emergencies Act 2004 from:

12:00am January 12, 2013 to 11:59 pm January 12, 2013.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a very hot day with strong west to northwesterly winds tomorrow and a predicted top temperature of 37 degrees.

The forecast Fire Danger Rating for tomorrow is predicted to be EXTREME.

If a fire starts at the forecast fire danger level of EXTREME it may be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving – flames will be higher than roof tops.

There is a very high likelihood that people in the path of the fire will be injured or die. Many homes and businesses will be destroyed.

Only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire.

Thousands of embers will be blown around.

Spot fires will move quickly and come from many directions, up to 6 km ahead of the fire.

For your survival leaving is the best option. You should relocate to the location identified in your Bushfire Survival Plan.

The ESA advises you to make sure you know where you will get more information and monitor the situation for any changes. You can do this through local ACT media outlets, the ESA website www.esa.act.gov.au, the ESA Twitter and Facebook accounts or by calling Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

UPDATE: And this from TAMS:

Territory and Municipal Services wishes to advise that due to a total fire ban in place on Saturday 12 January 2013, the following nature reserves and roads will be closed:

— Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (the Visitor Centre will remain open);

— selected roads within Namadgi National Park including Apollo Road, Orroral Road, Old Mill Road, Warks Road, Mount Franklin Road at Piccadilly Circus, and the Corin Dam Road (the Namadgi Visitor Centre will remain open);

— Googong Foreshores;

— Lower Molonglo River Corridor; and

— Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary.

Note that the Boboyan Road and Brindabella Road remain open to through traffic.

Additionally Namadgi National Park, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Googong Foreshores as well as Kowen Forest will remain closed until 7 am Sunday 13 January 2013 in the interests of public safety.

With the very bad fire weather expected in the coming days, closing Namadgi, Tidbinbilla, Googong Foreshores and Kowen Forest will ensure visitors are out of harm’s way should conditions deteriorate.

In an effort to accommodate recreational users, the Canberra Nature Park and all Pine Forest areas (other than Kowen Forest) will remain open to the public during the early morning hours, however users are advised that they should leave these areas no later than 11 am.

Electric barbeques provided at the Cotter, Casuarina Sands, Pine Island and in Canberra’s urban parks will be available, however all gas barbeques will be turned off.

For up-to-date Total Fire Ban declarations and more information about how they affect you, visit the ACT Emergency Services Agency website www.esa.act.gov.au, follow @ACT_ESA on Twitter or like ACT Emergency Services Agency on Facebook.
People can also contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

Praying The Holy Rosary twice daily for winds to cease (God, The Holy Spirit and Our Lady Mary have answered), Rains for Yass, Shoalhaven areas and the Kybeyan Ranges to extinguish fires now and for future generations. This rain hopefully will reach NSW and the ACT areas tonight and tomorrow – Praise and thanks be to God.

‘Ye of little faith, ask and you will receive’ Jesus says.

Facepalm.

Nah, this is Troll Level Expert.

Surely.

I hope…

Each to their own.

As long as they don’t intrude into my life….

Funnily enough, it’s been overcast and coolish today.

Well certainly cloudy but far from coolish i would’ve thought given it was 37.6 just after midday.

Still stinking hot @ 0109.

Eff you god, all these peeps prayed for cold winds and soothing rains yet we did not get anything besides hot weather!!!!

I noticed that, just after I posted earlier. Didn’t come to anything though. I’m not going to do anything facetious like use that as proof of a godless, indifferent universe, on the assupmtion that had it rained, you wouldn’t have used it as proof of the opposite.

I do like this prayer though, from The Book of Common Prayer, which is kind of reminding god of what he (she or he in modern terms, but he in this one) should do as a decent sort of chap:

‘For Rain.

GOD, heavenly Father, who by thy Son Jesus Christ hast promised to all those who seek thy kingdom, and the righteousness thereof, all things necessary to their bodily sustenance; Send us, we beseech thee, in this our necessity, such moderate rain and showers, that we may receive the fruits of the earth to our comfort, and to thy honour; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.’

If that’s not totally Anglican, cricket is the same as baseball. Send moderate rain.

My own view is that prayer is often directed hope; often a form of encapsulating emotion and clarifying thought. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. So long as you don’t see it as an excuse for not doing something practical, as other people have noted. Not that everyone can fight fires directly though, through age or wimpitude.

Feeling gratitude for those who do fight fires is another form of prayer, but I don’t think that belief in god is necessary for gratitude! Or for doing good, either.

That’s called weather, not a act of god!

As I said in the other thread, religious nuts, instead of wasting time on prayers to air, volunteer or donate.
Props to peeps like thumper who do donate their precious time.

Matt 6: 5-6

The bible mentions ACT & NSW, christ I didn’t know that…perhaps I should give it a read.

Oh, Christ!!

That one might work too

So if it doesn’t rain then you’ll accept the fact that even if there is a God he probably isn’t listening to you?

wildturkeycanoe3:25 pm 12 Jan 13

And back in March there were prayers for the rains to stop and the sun to come out.
Can’t win, can we? Maybe there’s a 6 month waiting list except for express prayers, which usually turn around in 10 business days, explaining all the lack of precipitation at the moment..

‘God, I pray that you will save me from your followers.’

Lol

So when the conditions occur as requested in the prayer, who gets the credit, God or BoM?
