Fireys out on Athllon Dr last night?

While travelling to Tuggeranong Hyperdome last night, while coming around the lake on Athllon Drive, there was a big mass of flashing red and blue lights up ahead. As we approached the dam behind the Tuggeranong skate park, we noticed a large number of fire rescue vehicles on the East-bound lanes.

There appeared to be about 2 or 3 smaller vehicles plus also a large cherry-picker which was setup hanging over the northern side of the road with a number of fireys looking over the edge to see down below.

A quick check on esa and actpol_traffic showed nothing at the time, and even this morning there appears to be nothing online. A friend suggested that the fire rescue guys use that spot as a training area, which given the lack of anything but fire rescue (no ambulance or police), tends to make a bit of sense. Just wondering if anyone knew what was going on.

That’s very sad news. College age? or a bit older. Sorry for your loss

If you’re talking about 12 months or so ago, no it wasn’t – a close friend of mine tried to end it jumping off the spillway.

The fireys often train at the dam spillway. I’ve seen them practising rescues off the bridge a few times before.
However, the time of day and the fact that there was also police and ambo’s there makes this possibility less likely.

Last time this happened it was just training.

I drove past this around 9:30pm and have been researching all day. When I drove past there was an ambulance, two fire trucks (one with a cherry picker) and two police cars. All of the vehicles had their lights on so I was unsure what it was. There were no damaged car’s and no damage to the side of the bridge so I was puzzled as to why there were so many emergency vehicles when there nothing out of the ordinary.

If its a suicide, then that is very sad news.

In which the ESA doesn’t report on – so is more than likely

Spillway? Not a jumper?

Reports are filtering in that it was as a result of a call to the Greens that an earless dragon had been seen munching on some wind-blown gm wheat that had apparently been blown out of the boot of a CSIRO scientist’s car that wasn’t closing properly because of funding cuts at the once-proud organisation to prop up an increasingly top-heavy bureaucracy on the lower slopes of Mt Ainslie. Due to the location of the alleged earless dragon sighting, over a fence constructed from highly dangerous wire, a decision was made to employ the new cherry pickin’ appliance to lower an inspection team down to observe this once in a lifetime event, an event that has survived the building of not only the airport but also the entire Tuggeranong pathway and Athllon Drive itself.

I drove past this at 7:00pm (southbound) and 7:20pm(northbound) last night and there was at least one police vehicle there. There were also lights set up down on the lower portions of the dam spillway.

Haven’t heard what is was about, but then again a few months ago I couldn’t find any mention on the ESA website about when they were called out to the construction site opposite the Kingston Hotel because smoke was coming out of the tower crane, so I’ve assumed the report selectively.
