A male pedestrian has died after a vehicle collided with him on Belconnen Way on Friday night (4 January).

ACT Policing is investigating a collision which occurred around 8 pm. The pedestrian was treated by ACT Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

It is the first fatality on ACT roads in 2019.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said this is a reminder to be careful on our roads.

“This is a tragic incident and the first fatality on ACT roads in 2019. I would urge all road users to exercise care and caution on our roads during this busy period.”

Police are encouraging anyone who witnessed or may have dash-cam footage of the incident to contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.

We (including the fatality), continually told the children never to walk the same route unless with a grown up. The children have now learned first hand that we were serious.

This is not the first time such a fatality has happened at the same “short cut” between suburban Belconnen and Jamison Centre, Macquarie.

I risked this route as a young teen attending Canberra High which borders upon this area.

A pedestrian bridge such as the Aranda or Kambah pedestrian overpass is long overdue possibly?

Maybe a think about a 60km speed limit alongside a school is warranted?

Thank you to the selfless kindness gifted by the off duty professionals who were first on the scene. Much kindness and respect to you. You know who you are.

I plead to the Canberra community – take no risks on our roads. Use proper pedestrian routes. Please.
