The first Tuggeranong residents started receiving their new green bins this week, with 5,000 people signed up for the new green waste collection service which begins on January 22.

The service is already available in Weston Creek and Kambah and is scheduled to start in Belconnen this September and to be rolled out city-wide by mid next year.

ACT City Services Minister Meegan Fitzharris said the 240-litre green waste bins will continue to be delivered over the next few weeks to all Tuggeranong residents who registered for the service.

“Over 6,000 residents expressed interest in obtaining a green waste bin in Tuggeranong, and over 5,000 have already signed up for the service,” Ms Fitzharris said.

Brindabella MLAs Joy Burch and Mick Gentleman joined Ms Fitzharris and Calwell resident Stephen McDougall for the delivery of one of the first green bins in Tuggeranong to Mr McDougall’s house.

Tuggeranong residents still have the chance to sign up for a green bin, with the delivery having a phased rollout according to when residents opted into the service. Residents who opted in before December 10 last year will receive the green bins first.

“If you live in Tuggeranong and are interested in getting one of the bins that have started to pop up in your street, then it is not too late to register,” Ms Burch said.

“A one-off registration fee of $50 is required, with eligible concession card holders exempt from payment.”

Mr Gentleman said the green waste service is a great way to help residents keep their gardens in “tip-top shape”.

“We know it’s something the people of Tuggeranong have been calling for, so I’m really pleased to see that green bins are now a reality for Tuggeranong residents,” Mr Gentleman said.

The Tuggeranong green waste bin collections will cover Banks, Bonython, Calwell, Chisholm, Conder, Fadden, Gilmore, Gordon, Gowrie, Greenway, Isabella Plains, Macarthur, Monash, Oxley, Richardson, Theodore, Wanniassa and Tharwa.

Residents in these suburbs will receive a pamphlet when their green waste bin is delivered which will answer questions about their collection day, and what can and can’t go into the bin. Detailed information is also available at www.actgreenwaste.jjrichards.com.au.

The materials which can be placed in the green waste bins include grass clippings, leaves, branches, flowers, garden prunings and weeds.

However, the materials that are banned from the green waste collection service include food waste, paper, cardboard, plastic bags, stumps, logs, soil, construction materials, processed timber and recyclables.

The green bins must not be overfilled, with the lid fully closed and the mass not exceeding 50 kilograms.

The bins will offset some of the 5,000 tonnes of garden waste that pours into landfill each year and save Canberrans from travelling to the tip to dispose of their green waste.

If you live in Tuggeranong, have you signed up for the green waste collection? How much benefit do you think it will provide? Let us know in the comments below.

Interesting to hear trash pack companies crying foul and demanding compensation. Strange, I don’t recall Coles and Woolies getting compensation when Aldi started in Australia.

If Aldi was government owned I imagine that Coles and Woolies would have had plenty to say…..

Personally, I think these are a terrible idea. Anyone wanting garden waste removed can be supplied a trash pack from one of the many mom and pop companies around Canberra. Nothing in life is for free. Which services will be cut? Or by how much will my rates increase to pay for this service? User pays seems much fairer.
