Local businesses can have their say on the expansion of paid parking in Phillip by attending a consultation session at Woden Library from 5-7pm today.

Transport and municipal services minister Meegan Fitzharris urged businesses operating in the area to provide feedback on the proposed parking arrangements.

“We want to ensure parking is structured so that local customers can find a park easily, and stop people who don’t work in the area from filling up the spots all day, which is happening currently,” she said.

“We want to provide businesses with a parking scheme that works for them, their employees and their customers, and we will be flexible in coming up with that solution.”

The minister held an earlier public consultation session at midday.

“The parking scheme, including the breakup of free and paid parking, and the allocation of 30-minute, one-hour and two-hour paid parking, has not been finalised and we want feedback from the community to help inform the final scheme.

“We are happy to take suggestions on board, and will make a final announcement about the mix of parking arrangements in the Phillip commercial precinct before 1 July.”

Those unable to attrend Monday’s sessions can provide feedback on the proposed paid parking scheme by emailing communityengagement@act.gov.au

We don’t want it. It will kill struggling small businesses. It will deter people taking out membership at Elite Fitness and Flames Fitness in the middle of an obesity epidemic. It will stop the poor being able to buy clothing and other essentials from the Salvos Store and Vinnies. There’s your feedback.

Just like in Belconnen. Oh wait businesses are still open, people go to the gym, the world hasn’t come to an end and poor people can still go to the Salvo’s.

You’ve got to admit JC that Belconnen has had a lot more government money spent on it than Phillip. Land & Planning have also focussed on developing Belconnen through excellent master plans and given a lot more approvals to development to improve Belconnen than they have Phillip. I am all for pay parking in Phillip, but that has to be balanced with some more development to improve the area on the whole and give it some better areas that will encourage businesses to open bars, restaurants and cafes. What’s there at the moment is targeted to weekday workers in the area, not to attracting people from the wider areas of Canberra.

Belco also got the finest selection of public art.

I quite like the owl.

It’s one of many exactly the same in other cities in Australia.

In fairness yes Belco has had more money in recent years, though lets not forget Woden did get money before Belconnen. Re the points you make one core difference between Belconnen and Woden/Phillip, is Woden and Phillip are two separate areas separated by a 6 lane road. Belconnen isn’t constrained as much. Consequently the business mix in the industrial part of Belconnen is a little more balanced compared to Phillip.

That said the point of my post is Belconnen didn’t come to a grinding halt with mass shop closures with the introduction of paid parking. Said in another post I don’t think it should be in industrial areas, or maybe I should clarify I don’t think short term parking should be charged, but all day should be. Only reason all day should be is to discourage workers elsewhere taking those parks to avoid pay parking elsewhere. And certainly don’t think car repair businesses should be using government car parks to park customer cars between jobs, again as per discussion elsewhere.

They haven’t given a single good reason as to why they want to introduce paid parking.
