The NRL’s official website brings word that five Canberra Raiders players have been selected to play in the Prime Minister’s XIII meeting Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on September 27. For the uninitiated, this is a traditional end-of-season friendly game which is organised in conjunction with AusAID and preceded by football and health clinics run by the NRL players within the Papua New Guinean community. Players are selected from the nine Australian NRL teams no longer in the finals race.

Joel Monaghan and Terry Campese will reprise their Origin positions at centre and five eighth respectively, while David Shillington and Tom Leroyd-Lahrs will be on the interchange bench. Josh Dugan will make his international debut at fullback – a tremendous achievement given that he hasn’t yet played a full season at NRL level. It’s also pleasing to note that Monaghan, Campese and Dugan are former local juniors, and that Raiders legend Mal Meninga will be coaching the PM’s XIII team.

Congratulations to all involved!

We’ve got the makings of a powerhouse team in the next few years. These boys will make the apathetic people of canberra take notice and learn to love again.

don’t know if we’ll be a powerhouse…but I reckon we will improve and I like the long term plan of investing in new players.
What I do is there will be no apathetic crowd as the soccer bogans claim. The numbers turning up for both the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies will always exceed the soccer crowds…dare we mention the Cosmos?

Good result boys, congrats & keep playing well. Hopefully the Kangaroos next year!
