Five to try: Hot cross buns

Just when I feel like I’ve finally recovered from the overeating that is Christmas, it seems Easter pops up in all it’s chocolate-fuelled glory and we start all over again.

But hey, I’m not complaining. One of my favourite things about this time of year is waking up to the smell of hot cross buns toasting in the oven. There’s something so nostalgic about that spicy aroma wafting through the house. It’s like a big warm hug of buttery goodness.

Now let’s get one thing clear, when we’re talking hot cross buns, we’re talking the traditional kind, none of these plain, choc chip, double choc varieties. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the indulgence every now and then, but they aren’t real hot cross buns. In my opinion, traditional fruit-filled hot cross buns are the only real hot cross buns.

This week I bring you (in no particular order) five Canberra bakeries and their hot cross buns to try:

5. A. Baker

A Baker

Let’s kick things off with the winners of our hot cross bun taste off last year. Located in the NewActon precinct, A. Baker’s hot cross buns are among the best I’ve ever had. With high quality ingredients and just the right amount of spice and dried fruit, you can taste the love that’s gone into them. They are taking orders right up until Good Friday and I highly recommend you getting your mouth around one. Find out more: A. Baker on Facebook

4. Silo Bakery

Silo Bakery in Kingston is a bit of a Canberra institution – and rightly so, their pastries, tarts and artisan breads are to die for. Their hot cross buns are no exception, known for being packed full of fruit and spiced just the right amount. Find out more: Silo Bakery

3. Autolyse

Autolyse are located on Lonsdale Street in Braddon and are well known for their delicious bread, particularly their sourdough that can be found in independent grocers all over town. Their hot cross buns are pretty damn good too and the best thing – they are available at Supabarn and Ainslie IGA every day until Easter. Find out more: Autolyse on Facebook

2. Dream Cuisine

Tucked away on Whyalla Street in Fyshwick is Dream Cuisine, probably best known for their award-winning and interesting variety of macarons (beer macaron, anyone?). Their hot cross buns are just as good – fluffy, spicy and just the right amount of sweet. Find out more: Dream Cuisine on Facebook

1. Danny’s Bakery

Danny’s Bakery in Narrabundah is best described as a good old fashioned no fuss bakery. It’s a family run business and you can tell they take their baking seriously. You can taste the passion that goes into every loaf. When it comes to their hot cross buns, they are sourdough, deliciously big and baked by Danny himself. Find out more: Danny’s Bakery on Facebook

I love the chocolate hot cross buns from Bakers Delight – straight out of the oven!

Croissant d’Or are making good ones this year. Good size, spicy. They use some zest but no peel, which is my only criticism. More mixed peel!

I am part of the peel-free-is-best brigade, so I’m very interested to learn about Croissant d’Or’s zesty version, thanks for letting us know, @pajs.
